Dementia and carbs?

Recommended Posts

Got this article in my emails this morning and promptly read it through. Very enlightening and also, somewhat scary. Yep, I need to make sure, at age 60, that I continue to limit my carbs!!!!!!

This article is powerful stuff. The more we learn about carbohydrates and their role in our diet, the scarier it gets.

American diets have changed from when I was a girl in the 60's. Back then, portions were much smaller, we had "balanced" meals (Protein, veg, starch), and dessert was a rare thing. Soda was a treat to be enjoyed by itself, not a daily beverage. You'd go and have a coke with someone. It was an event. When you went to restaurants, you weren't presented with an endless basket of rolls or biscuits or breadsticks prior to your meal.

Diabetes was rare and being overweight was the exception not the rule. We had recess and PE in school. We drank whole milk and ate butter on everything. We ate bacon. We had peanuts at the ball game and popcorn at the movies, not nachos, or jumbo burgers with fries, or fried oreos. Things have changed slowly but surely and today's diet is certainly different than it used to be. It makes you wonder.

Georgia and others, I believe this is the mayo Clinic research that his book is based on, check it out too, not as scary, but still some of the same facts. Not as extreme... (His book is for sale....so remember that.....) Still worth looking at though...

If you google Dementia and Carbohydrates there is actually a fair amount out there on the subject. There seems to be two camps: The Mediterranean diet group and the Very low carb group, but they both share some views, such as high fat intake reducing dementia occurences.

My dad mentioned this to me recently. He had seen a show (I can't remember if he said it was Dr. Oz or The Doctors) where they talked about this -- he was surprised that a lot of starchy root vegetables were mentioned to be much worse for a person than has been thought in the past -- apparently carrots, turnips, potatoes, etc. can add to the risk of dementia.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
