Stuck - bypass vs. band

Recommended Posts

I see a lot of references to bypass patients saying they get "stuck". Is that the same "stuck" feeling that banders get?

I just wondered if the stuck I experienced with the band would be the same.

I'm over two years post-op (bypass) and have never had the "stuck" problem but some bypass folks do experience it with certain foods. I never had the band so can't make any personal comparisons. That said, in reading posts on the forum and other places it seems to be a more common problem with the band than with the bypass. There are lots of folks on the forum that have had band to bypass revisions and I'm sure they'll offer input on your question.

I am a band to bypass conversion and can say the stuck feeling is the same. With the band it happened every day with almost all food for me. Since bypass it has happened twice in 7 months. Both times from chicken and eating too fast.

I think chicken is the culprit. It happens with the sleeve too. Chicken is so dense. I still get it "stuck" after 3 1/2 years

This is a choice you and only you can make, but I am a post banded person and I am on my way to get the bypass done because I had to have the band removed due to complications, and I wasn't told some of the things that I know now after doing much more research due to going to have the bypass done, that you have got to be super conscious on what your eating one the band and you have got to eat healthy or it's not going to work for you, as you can eat a cookie with the band and as long as you chew it up enough and don't drink with it, it's still going to go through. After my surgery with the band I could still eat a 6" subway veggie grinder? I didn't plan on it, but it happened??? I didn't have any filling at that point but that hole is still really small without the fill too??? You have to decide what is best for you? Good luck!!!

I went from band to rny if I knew what I know now I would have gone with rny to start with. I had to many issues with my band. Talk to your doctor they will help you to make the best choice for you. Good luck.

I don't have a choice to make. I used to be banded and now am having RNY. I was just wondering if I should anticipate the same horrible feeling. I got stuck all the time with my band with no fill. It was misery.

I know the stuck feeling oh to well. Painful on so many levels. I went 1 1/2 years post op

Before I got something stuck and it felt like no pain I've ever had. I think I just ate to fast didn't chew well enough. I think it angered my pouch and didn't give it enough time to heal after. I did get stuff stuck after but now I'm good.

It is the worst pain. I'm disappointed I might still get stuck but I also am glad it happens less. I will have to be sure to chew really well.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
