I am having my first set of pre-op testing tomorrow, 1/6/14. NP of my Surgeon's practice has recommended RNY surgery. My family is less than supportive out of fear. I also fear complications post-op. I have many co-morbidities including Diabetes, Heart Disease, just to name a few. I also have a moderately enlarged liver due to high cholesterol/triglicerides. Has anyone else had this problem (also enlarged spleen) and had RNY surgery? Was it done laparoscopically, open incision? What if any complications were there?

I have fears but as with any surgery there are risks involved. I don't have to do the lovenox injections thank god but they don't differ from insulin injections.

Why would one not have to take the injections? I'm just asking because I don't know.

It's to prevent blood clots. Some surgeons recommend it others don't.

Ummm...anyone else have a total fear of the whole injections in your stomach?? Ahhhhh! I get queasy talking about it! So...who is gonna tell me about this??

I've had one in my belly three days in a row. I promise I'm a total wuss and you really can barely feel them.

haven't seen my Surgeon yet...still going through all of the early pre-procedure testing and

appointments. I am curious as to whether I may need an open procedure (RNY) due to an enlarged

I had two to three injections and barely felt it.

Go to Youtube and search Fat Doctor. This is a UK TV show about patients just like us having bypass and the band. It is very graphic, actually showing the full surgery but the show addresses fears and questions we all have. Also shows patients several months later. I have watched at least 10 episodes and feel much more comfortable with the procedure. Also get The Big Book on Gastric Bypass, it will answer pretty much every question you have.

I had two to three injections and barely felt it.

The needles must be very thin, I didn't feel much either. Either that or it was because of the morphine. :-)

yeah i had a band, then sleeve and that stretched, then had hernia, so due to scar tissue have to have open surgery...

i am so nervous and scared as I havent had open surgery so i dont know how much pain to expect...

I was very scared -- even wrote goodbye letters to my family the night before surgery. However, my risk if dying from obesity was greater than my risk for surgery. My husband was very worried -- he's been supportive AFTER the surgery. I have told very few people otherwise.

I had diabetes (controlled by insulin and pills), high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and high tri with stage 3 fatty liver. I followed the pre-op diet for two weeks without cheating. My liver was still fatty.

My surgery was a lap RNY 13 days ago. I didn't die. They also repaired an umbilical hernia while they were in there. So far I am down 37 lbs -- and am completely free of ALL diabetes meds and HBP meds. ????. Thus far I am complication free.

so glad to hear. I was told i wont live next 12 months as my insulin is producing 10 times more than it should and killing my liver and kidneys, i am also insulin resistant. I only weigh 100kg but need bypass to correct the insulin and get rid of the diabeties and repair the liver and kidneys. scary stuff, i too arranged my funeral and letters to family. so glad you are loosing only 13 days into it - well done. I too, was a high insulin producer. It started with my pregnancy with my son and never really rectified itself. I had done a good job at keeping my A1c at around 6.5, but that required 2000 mg of metformin and two large dosages of novolog (fast and med acting insulin) per day. The insulin and my resistance made it very difficult to control my appetite and of course my weight.

In the pre-op work-ups, I learned that I also suffered from fatty liver disease. Ironically, I have low total cholesterol. However, my trigycerides were always seriously elevated. Fatty liver is reversible. However, they did take a biopsy during my RNY and found that I also had mild fibrosis. This is scarring due to the fatty liver and it is NOT reversible. So I am very thankful that I did this before my liver got worse -- which it certainly would have.

My kidneys have also suffered due to my diabetes/obesity. I have chronic Protein in my urine. So far, I have been lucky not to have kidney damage and good function -- but it would have only been a matter of time before I entered the realm of chronic kidney failure.

I am not on puree yet. I am still on full liquids. I started the pre-op diet around December 15th which consisted of Clear Liquids and 4-5 Protein shakes per day. It was really hard at first -- the first three days were really tough -- but it became easier as time went by. I think being through Christmas was definitely a bit harder, but I learned a lot about myself during that time and really set my mind to be prepared for the post surgery period. I didn't cheat once during that time -- I really wanted my liver to be as small as possible for my surgeon. Like yourself, I wanted to be healthier and not have complications.

Directly after the surgery, I was on clear liquids for a week. It didn't must matter -- it's a full time job learning to get in the fluids that are necessary to stay hydrated with your new pouch. I stared full liquids upon coming home. It hasn't been bad and I have been easily meeting both my liquid and protein requirements.

I am allowed to slowly add pureed foods come Tuesday (my birthday). I have been pureeing Proteins as I have cooked for my family, portioning into 3 oz servings, and freezing.

I was totally spazzing about the lovenox and b12 injections BUT a year ago I was dx with diabetes and now take insulin. I figure a pin cushion belly for a little while longer is way better than the rest of my life! (:

No surgery date yet, I'm not really scared.. My faith in The Lord is strong and for now I am able to "give it to God" and focus on everything else besides my fears. (:

The levonox injections truly are not big deal. They are a lot like the insulin injections. :-)
