I am having my first set of pre-op testing tomorrow, 1/6/14. NP of my Surgeon's practice has recommended RNY surgery. My family is less than supportive out of fear. I also fear complications post-op. I have many co-morbidities including Diabetes, Heart Disease, just to name a few. I also have a moderately enlarged liver due to high cholesterol/triglicerides. Has anyone else had this problem (also enlarged spleen) and had RNY surgery? Was it done laparoscopically, open incision? What if any complications were there?

Hello! I am having my RNY Wednesday. I was told by my surgeon that the RNY could totally get rid of your diabetes (Type 2). You will also lose more weight with it. I figure there's always going to be a risk with any surgery but your risk with diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol is soooo much higher than your risk with surgery! Good luck with your choice. You've got to do what's right for you. Hang out here for a while, you'll get tons of support! Whatever you choose, you'll be amazing!

I too am having pre-op fears...my surgery isn't for a few weeks yet though. I'm scared something might happen to me...I have 3 kiddos 18, 11, and 9. I don't want them to lose their mommy... I've never had any surgery before...sometimes I feel the fear almost take me over...i know that if I dont make a change that they could loose their mommy young too...ohhhh...praying for strength, comfort and a smooth surgery.

With the exception of the enlarged spleen I had all of the same problems plus a family history of adhesions (scar tissue) that forced an open surgery to remove my gall bladder about ten years ago. Ten years is like a century in medicine. My surgeon knew my complete history including the adhesions - she said there was no way of knowing if she would be able to do it laparascopically until she got in there. Bottom line - she was able to perform the surgery laparascopically. I was literally shocked at how little post-op pain I had. Took Tylenol with Codeine twice and haven't had so much as an aspirin since.

They diagnosed an ulcer at the anastomosis about six months post-op. Surgeon doubled my Rx for Prevacid and they repeated the endoscopy three months later and the ulcer was completely healed. 99% of folks are nervous (aka scared spitless) of the surgery and the other 1% are liars. Lol! I'd be more worried if you weren't scared! But the reality was much less dramatic than my pre-op over-active imagination had conjured up. Best decision I ever made and I'd do it again in a second!

Hi I too have alot of fears im just starting on my pathway and hope to get the op around August this year I also have a 6yr old son im soo scared that somethinb might go wrong, I have alot of mobility issues mainly caused by arthritis. I need to lose the weight to keep pressure of my joints. I have read so much on her and other sires and believe none of us would be here if we did not need surgery to help us, although its scary I do believe it will be worth it in the long run.

Hi kenny good luck with op, I have to wait till August as I have only just started my pathway to the op, I know its scary and often worry wether I am making the right choice by having the op. But the way I look at it I cant lose the weight without the op and once I have lost the weight I might be able to walk alot longer, I have severe arthritis in most of my joints and im only 38. Im scared that something might go wrong but you could get run over or having car crash every day we take risks this one is more calculated risk. The doctors have done so many of these ops. Please keep strong life will be better and you will be able to enjoy your kids more walk in park without getting so tired or out of breath be strong.

I'm 39 , I'm definetly ready for it, I've got arthritis also & back issues can't wait to feel better.

I have disc disease and prolapsed discs and artritis in spine I use scooters and wheelchair when needed but I do try to walk when I can. Im sure that things will get better once we both have had our ops good luck let me know how you get on

But if this decision and chosen path were easy, everyone would do it. The fact that we are all here, pre-op, post-op, etc. and supporting each other shows more dedication, courage and love than moments of fear any of us here possess. We are here, you will never be alone.

I am nervous as well 1-29 is my surgery date. Keep the Faith

Having open surgery gastric bypass 26 March scared to death! Got appt with dietician coming from up as I need to learn what to eat as my fear is dumping syndrome. At this sstage been told 3 nights stay. I too have osteoarthritis bad shoulders, type 2 diabetes and take cholesterol pills so look forward to coming off meds. Taking all the vitamins etc now so my hair doesn't fall out!

Hi fleabag1975 it will a case of not taking meds but its vits instead lol but at least youmhave a date good luck with it. I am having the issue of not being able to stop picking at food at the mo although im trying be good by eating carrots or fruit I still have the odd slip up but not as bad as I once was. Dumping is a concern for me too but they say your taste buds change after op so hopefully we will ok.

Ummm...anyone else have a total fear of the whole injections in your stomach?? Ahhhhh! I get queasy talking about it! So...who is gonna tell me about this??

I have fears but as with any surgery there are risks involved. I don't have to do the lovenox injections thank god but they don't differ from insulin injections.
