Is it ever comfortable to eat again?

Recommended Posts

Every time I eat, not matter what it is, or even drink it makes me terribly uncomfortable. Sometimes it makes me terribly nauseous but most of the time just REALLY uncomfortable, even if I only take one or two tiny bites. I'm 8 weeks post op, does the discomfort ever go away? I know that if I OVER eat or eat too fast it will be uncomfortable, but I don't think I'm doing either of those things....

Yes, it gets better. Every week improves. For me it was around 3-4 months, but everyone is different. Give it time :)

Can you be more specific about the discomfort? Is it like gas? Or like pressure on your diaphragm? Throat closing? Stomach cramps?

I'm sorry you're struggling. It could be any number of things. At 8 weeks, I think I could eat fairly comfortably, although I did (& still do!) have to be very mindful of not eating too fast or taking too big of bites. Have you talked to your surgeon about this?

Your restriction is probably just super strong right now from the swelling. I'm a year out and don't have discomfort when I eat anymore .

I have a slight stricture so I feel ya'! Even at 7 months out, eating can be unpleasant for me.

Have you tried using baby utensils or cocktail forks? I find that these force me to take teeny bites which makes things better. I also have to SLOW the freak down or I am miserable and it all comes back up. I was forcing myself to take a nibble, walk a lap around the house (open floor plan so I could still be with my family, ha!) and then come back for another bite.

I also have days where I can eat 3-4 ounces at a time and days where an ounce or two is more than I can handle.

You will figure it out. Talk to the NP about a stricture just in case. They can stretch it, I just chose not to because I needed to reminder to do the above.

I'm 3 1/2 months out and eating is not uncomfortable for me. Right after surgery it was very uncomfortable. I also figured out that when I was nauseous it was because of gas. I would feel like I needed to throw up, then I'd burp and feel better. I also used Gas-X strips and they helped a lot.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
