Can someone tell me what dumping is?

Recommended Posts

I keep seeing this on the threads but don't know what it is. My surgeon told me that it count happen with the sleeve so I haven't ever really looked into it.

What causes it? What does it feel like? What happens?

Gastric dumping syndrome, is a condition where ingested foods bypass the stomach too rapidly and enter the small intestine largely undigested. It happens when the small intestine expands too quickly due to contents from the stomach.

Symptoms of early dumping include nausea, vomiting, bloating, cramping, diarrhea, dizziness, and fatigue. "Late" dumping happens one to three hours after eating. Symptoms of late dumping include weakness, sweating, and dizziness.

The syndrome is most often associated with gastric bypass (Roux-en-Y) surgery.

I googled it also. That's not really what I'm asking. I'm asking what is it like in the real world. What does it feel like? What foods cause it? Etc.

For a very few people with the sleeve, eating foods very high in sugar, like fruit juices or Desserts. It feels like a stomach flu with dizziness, sweating, chills, the whole 9 yards. It's different from diarrhea, which some people also get especially early post-op.

I have had it since my gall bladder was removed in 08. It's like I literally get a little light headed and start sweating. Then there is a painful churning in my stomach and I have to go RIGHT THEN. While I'm actually going to the restroom my sweating and churning continue, as does my pain. For me it can even happen in the middle of a meal. Sometimes it will take several trips to the restroom until only orange or yellow acidic bile is coming out due to no gall bladder.

Heavy creamy foods like Alfredo sauce, acidic foods like Tomato based marinara, any fried foods, lettuce... My Protein shakes ... Really too many foods to name.

This has been such a problem and my surgeon said if I follow the rules with my sleeve and eat dense Proteins first, maybe it will slow down or stop it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
