Does your taste for food change forever post op?

Recommended Posts

I've tried a few things I used to absolutely love prior to surgery and now I find them disgusting. Not that this is a bad thing because I should defiantly stay away from some of these things, but will those taste stay the same or will my original taste buds come back months after surgery?

Yes yes yes! Pre op I was the queen of bland. Now all I want is spicy, chilly, pepper fuelled foods! It's totally bizarre. Also, I usually enjoy sweets but because of the liquid diet I have been completely off sugar. Today I tried the tiniest piece of plum pudding and it was revoltingly sweet. I believe that's common after detoxing from sugar. It's really interesting observing the changes! Good luck with your journey.

The tolerance for sweet tastes is almost always reduced after surgery. Things just taste too sweet. That does tend to ease off a bit with time but not for everyone. That's why you shouldn't stock up on Protein shakes you like pre-op because there is a huge chance they will be too sweet after.

Fatty foods can make you feel sick post-op so people with that reaction may lose the taste for those foods, whether fried ones or things like ice cream.

Lots of us find that we start to really enjoy vegetables and we really like non-fatty seasonings like chillies, exotic kinds of salts and fresh herbs. We branch out and get more creative with how we prepare foods. We can realize that some foods give us energy and make us feel great so we can start to gravitate toward them.

Some foods fill us up too quickly or hurt our sleeves and we will generally learn our lesson and tend not to have those foods often. For me, one such food is French fries. I can't eat enough of them to feel the emotional satisfaction so I usually don't start.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
