Post-op diet (first 4 weeks)

Hi everyone

I am 10days post op and even tho my body is pretty tender still I think I have healed up pretty fast internally. My doc and dietician said that my post op diet should look like this-

Week 1: thin nutritious liquid

Week 2: thicker nutritious liquid

Week 3: mushy food like baby food, mash potato

Week 4: blended down normal food.

I'm 10 days post op and in the 2nd week and am able to tolerate quite a bit of mashed potato etc.

Is this too soon? Am I doing any damage!? I don't feel sick just hungry!! And I'm killing to try something more substantial.

My dietician said that in week 3 if I want to try take a bite of something I should try it. But am so concerned that I'm ahead of the diet plan that I may be doing damage.

Any advice???????????? I've emailed my dietician but she is on holiday leave!!

Not yet. Just the stuff they sent me home with regarding the exact same diet instructions you posted.

my diet progressed every 5th day unless not tolerated. you need to find out if a week means 7 days or 5 days. and you don't know how your insides are healing. you can't see it. and at this point you don't want a stuck issue. it can swell you up like you wouldn't believe. try try to follow your doctors orders. it is very important.

I followed my surgeon's plan! Since you came home with one, I suggest hat you try to follow it. You probably can tolerate other\ foods, but since you are healing, you should stick to the plan. Best wishes, Karen..aka.kll724

I agree with Karen. I too am eager to advance my diet. However, there is a reason they have prescribed the diet they have.

While different doctors do have different plans, I highly recommend waiting and following their schedule. It's seems that, yes, it's to promote healing, it's also progressing our weight loss quicker leading to more motivation to stick to the plan long term.

Thanks everyone.

My gut tells me (excuse the pun) that ur all right. But have I already messed things up?? I've been eating mashed potato.... But been drinking lots of fruit juices and shakes n yoghurt n Icecream. So everything else seems to be within limits and on time.

My doctor advised me against high fat, high calorie and high carb choices. Personally, I would avoid ice cream, mashed potatoes and juice. I have made my own Soup to puréed as well. chicken broth, lots of chicken, celery, green onion, broccoli, and Lima Beans to make it a bit creamy. Carbs in Lima beans, so I go light on them. Salt and pepper to taste. It's actually pretty good. And good for you. You should experiment on some home made choices. You might impress yourself.

No, you haven't messed anything up, imo. But, learning how to eat with the band can be the most difficult thing to learn. Eating solid food like any meats at this point could be destructive if you don't eat very small bites and chew to mush. The band is sutured into the lining of your stomach and if you get food stuck at this time, you could cause those sutures to tear and your band may slip. Not likely, but you must be very careful during the first 30 days.

You may be extremely hungry before you get your fills/adjustments. We call this "Bandster Hell". The band won't work it's magic till you get that one fill that gives you satiety for 2-4 hours.

for best results, its best to follow your doctors guidelines as TMF stated in regards to eating.....you won't starve..stay busy, do other things besides focusing on (eating food).....you will survive. promise.

I had a very specific post op food progression from my surgeon. First 48: Clear liquids. Day's 3-7: Full liquids. Days 8 through 30: mushies. My first aftercare appointment was on day 29 and my NP took pity on me (I was begging, by that point! LOL) and let me transition from mushies to real food (glory!!!!) two whole days early. :D

Post op diets are important. They are very soft and mild so that your stomach can heal and your band can settle into place and get ready to perform it's function. You may feel up to eating regular foods sooner but your gut isn't. It is still tender and vulnerable and can be damaged if you put the wrong stuff in it, too soon.

I almost went bananas on the post op diet. Three weeks of mushies nearly drove me around the bend! LOL But every time I was tempted to sneak a bite of something I shouldn't I would remind myself of what I was working toward and what I stood to lose if I didn't hold the line. The healing is only a month. It feels like an eternity for that month, then it is over. Hang in there. :)

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
      Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
