Time off work

Recommended Posts

So just curious how much time off work you guys took? I have two jobs. A desk job which I plan in taking a week and then maybe half days the next week. My second job is a cashier at Walmart. I definitely need more time off there. Any suggestions from those who have already been through it? My surgery is on jan 21.

Everyone's experience is quite different. I took 2 full weeks off and I needed it. I am wimp for pain, though, so I usually read on here that people take less time off than I did. Sitting up started to hurt my incisions after about 30 minutes at the 2 week mark, so I worked from home for the 3rd week post-op so that I could recover even more. Well worth the time off - I hadn't taken a vacation in a long time and it was both relaxing and rewarding to return to work (only 2 people at work knew my vacation was really surgery) feeling healed and ready to go.

I took off one week. I also have a desk job. It was a little rough the first 2 days back but I didn't need more than just the week. Good luck!

I'm still out after 3 weeks and will likely be out for another 5 weeks...it gets really boring, but I guess it's nice to be able to get on a set schedule with eating and cooking. I'm out of work for so long because I have a very physically demanding job, not because of complications, which I'm happy for!

I took 2 weeks off and wish I had taken more but had surgery end of Oct right at the start of our busiest month at work so had to...I am an over the road trucker and believe me its more than just sitting doing nothing by the end of my first 70 hour week I was worn out and I still am lol

Anyways I found wearing a belly band or compression garment really helped with the soreness, very loose waist band on my pants. Good luck on your wonderful journey!

Ha! I'd think just gettin in out of the truck is alot of work!!! Despite the fact my job requires alot of running, now I feel like a baby taking so much time off! Lol but that is a good idea about the belly band!

I guess I feel very fortunate that my dad and my fiancé insisted I take the next two years off of work to really focus on me and my new lifestyle. I've been working and in school/ college since I was 15, I hope I don't go crazy! But I look forward to being able to focus on me and plan meals and dedicate time to exercise.

My doc wrote me out for six weeks and, you know what, I think I may actually take them! I also have a desk job, so not physically demanding, but sometimes stressful of course. When else would I be able to take six weeks off for ME? I'm only 5 days post-op now and getting a little bored already, but I have a lot to learn about this new way of eating and being, and once Christmas passes and I have some strength back, I think I'll be happy I took the six.

Thanks for the input. I am a single mom of two teenagers who luckily both work. I can't afford much time off.

I took two weeks but could've gone back after one. I went out on FMLA which protects my job in case of complications. It also enabled me to collect TDI even though I had enough sick time to cover my time out. So I was paid double while out of work - a pleasant bonus! :-)

I'm going for the same-other than maternity leave it's rare to get extended time off

I had minor complications. They removed my gallbladder and repaired a hernia during surgery. I got an infection in the area where the gallbladder used to sit. This required two additional one day hospitalizations. I had 7 weeks off and I needed 6 of them. As a teacher, it worked well since it was over the summer. Good luck!!

2 weeks off from work but honestly I didn't go back fill time. The hardest thing I faced was the fatigue I felt immediately post op. I'm a nurse so not a lot of time to stay still and I would feel so drained at 1st. The pain issue wasn't that awful I just was tired. Thankfully it passed and I was back to running circles around the office.

I took 10 weeks off, I wanted to make sure I was ready to return and I wanted to get a routine going with what I was able to eat before returning, I'm glad I took that time off, I used my short term disability along with FMLA.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
