Perspective On Portions

Recommended Posts

I stayed within my protein/calorie goal this holiday weekend but felt like I was eating a lot. After reflecting, I think it wasn't really a quantity issue but more of an off-routine issue which made me feel less in control.

I asked my fiancé if he thought I was eating too much after we had dinner on Friday at his parents house. They had served lasagna which is not something I would've chosen at home. His response was, "I think you barely eat anything at all. If I had to eat what you eat, I think I'd die."

So even though I felt like maybe I was eating too much, I think maybe it was just that I'm so used to weighing and measuring my food and because I ate an unmeasured portion, I was getting scared that I was pigging out when in reality I wasn't. Had this happened to anyone else?

I feel like I eat "a lot" at times too. I hope it is that I am just adjusting to my new small portions since I still serve everything in a 1/2 cup size bowl or very small plate and I am 10 months out. I'd prefer that my calories be around 800-900 but they are usually 1000-1100 usually though

Yes this happened to me at Thanksgiving because I kind of put a lot on my plate because I was self conscious and then I just pushed the food around. Kind of silly. But also scary because I had no idea whatsoever of the quantity I ate. My MIL is obsessed with what I order at restaurants and she doesn't know about my surgery, so I mostly did this to placate her. I'm glad I'm back to my usual tracking because I felt a little out of control.

There are definitely days when I feel I've eaten a lot, and then I log it and discover I'm still low on calories. Unfortunately the other way around has also been true.

Although I'm getting better at it, I still need to weigh or measure my food. I feel out of control when I can't do that. I also feel out of control if I eat 5-6 things at a meal. It "seems" like a lot even though it might only be a few tbsp of each. I'm hoping this gets easier for us with time.

This is one of the harder things to get used to. I actually spent a few minutes beating myself up over eating 900-ish calories today. And then I had to stop and say WTF to myself…a 900 calorie day is just fine, especially when balanced out over my last 7 days. As a matter of fact, because I'm cleared to start back to exercise later this week, I will probably find that I need to keep it around 900-1000 calories.

I don't know if it's that I don't yet believe this will work, or what. I'm still my own worst enemy here.

I think our heads are definitely playing tricks on us!! I expected a lot of mental/emotional adjustment but this one is weird to me. Glad I'm not alone!

I'm doing it now also.

I know due to TOM I'm eating more carbs but I'm trying to not notice that for a few days. HA

I thought my plate looked over full but couldn't eat it all and I know I measured my food to my 1/2 cup portions.

Our over active brains are a strange thing.

We still have Apple pie in the fridge untouched....I told my husband today that if he doesn't eat what he wants tonight it goes in the trash in the morning. He thankfully understood.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
