Smokers: How long did you quit before your surgery. I am having a rough time at it. I believe my surgery will be sometime in January if my insurance approves it (crossing fingers, praying). I know, I know, I better quit very soon if not sooner!

I don't smoke but a friend who had the surgery quit 3 months prior. Her doc ran nicotine tests preop and would not do surgery on anyone who tested positive. There are going to be a lot of changes for you to make all at once immediately postop, so best to knock out the smoking ASAP so as not to add one more thing to deal with.

And not to freak you out, but she said the diet changes were actually harder than quitting smoking, so be prepared!

I quit one month before. My doctor didn't make any no nicotine demands, but preferred I quit. Most people are asked to quit 2 months to 6 weeks before surgery. I quit and I'm still quit. It feels good! You can do this!

I didn't quit and still haven't quit and I hate it. But if you can do it, now is the time. I wish you all the luck in the world with the quitting and your surgery. :-)

My surgeon also does testing for nicotine and will not do surgery if you test positive.

I quit a three-pack-a-day habit back in February 2005, with the help of Wellbutrin. If I can do it, anyone can!

Good luck!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
