Does your body go into shock after banding?

Recommended Posts

Hi..

I wondered if anyone else experienced this...

1 week after banding, lost 8lb

2 weeks after, lost another 5lb

3rd week lost 1 lb

This week...(4th week) lost nothing.

I am eating no more than 800 cals every day (Gods honest truth!), so just a simple equation tells me that I should have lost weight because I am expending more energy than I am consuming.

Is the body in shock... like "woah there... we are starving on a desert island" or something? Self preservation mode?

I am having a fill on thursday, but I am a little disheartened. Actually I am really upset. :cry

I know that most weight will come off after the fill, but I just dont understand why I havent lost anything eating so little...

Anyone else get this?

Banded 14 February 2007

Yes, I think quite a few of us are going through that. I was banded the same day as you, and same type of weight loss as you. Really at a standstill now. I think you are right, the body is conserving energy, and holding onto that weight.

In the past I have noticed that if I eat a little more one day, it spurs me into losing a lb. or two. Maybe that is just me, though.

I have had the same problem. I lost 12 pounds after surgery then it stopped for like a week. It started to really upset me, so I tried a different method of eating habits and lost 3 pounds within 6 days! I then got my first fill (from .7 to 1.5) and lost 4 pounds in 5 days! Thats Fast!

Try upping your calories to about 1000-1200, heavy on Protein, and see if it doesn't wake up your metabolism :)

I'll not lose for 3 or 4 days, do this, and drop 2 lbs overnight.

the absolute same thing is happening to me. I haven't lost in about 2 weeks now. I'm not eating more than 900 calories.

I am concerned about getting a fill, because I feel that I'm not eating enough now to even cut back on!

I am currently experiencing the same thing. Very discouraging but I try not to dwell on it to keep from getting further frustrated. I have increased my Protein and Water. I joined Curves last week also. Hopefully things will turn around. Got banded 1/19/07. Have not had a fill yet.Wondering if it is time. I will see what the rest of this month brings.

Every diet program I've ever used (and Lord knows, there were many) told me that under 1000 calories a day, your body moves into starvation mode and holds weight. We're still supposed to be eating 1000 calories a day, even though we're banded, so any less than that....your body is going to fight you!

Always keep in mind that you might not lose EVERY single week. It is frustrating but it happens. I went for an entire month and only lost 4 lbs....but dropped an entire pant size. Sometimes I dont drop for a week or two and then the loss continues. As long as it is a continuous downward trend you will get there!

This thread was VERY refreshing to read. I too have been experiencing this issue. I was banded on Feb 5th and go for my first fill this week. If any of you are female that are commenting, wonder if you noticed when your "monthly visitor" arrives if it made a difference. Not only did I not lose, but I gained two pounds. I was totally discouraged and pretty ticked off. I have been extremely dedicated to my diet and keep it right at 1000 cal per day. Once the "visitor" was gone, I dropped 3 lbs in a two days. Guess between Water weight and bloating, it is norm, but I found this no weight loss thing frustrating. I sat down one night with my hubby and was nearly brought to tears. I was explaining (of course hubby thought I was nuts)..."I haven't had a single slice of pizza, no cheese enchiladas, no wine/cocktails when dining out, no Pasta, and on and on. Still no weight loss. I am ok with giving up my favorite foods because I know they are not the most healthy of choices, but for goodness sakes, I want to be losing if I am making good choices! Or at least mentally this is where I am at. At the end of the day, I know the biggest thing I need to do, is to exercise. Thanks for letting me vent my concerns. Although I am sad to hear you are all going through the same thing, I don't feel so alone. Please keep sharing, this is SO, SO helpful.

Best to everyone!

Yes, I notice that I gain about two-three pounds when my monthly visitor is here. Started during my pre-op diet and both months since my surgery. I get so frustrated but I try to remember that it is due to Fluid retention. I try not to even weigh during that time. I end up losing it but it just does something to me to see the increase on the scale and I know I have not ate anything fattening. I think I am more worried that it won't go away afterwards.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
