Swallowing Fluids Right After Surgery

Recommended Posts

I it normal to have issues with swallowing. When I take sips I get a sensation of gas in my esophagus with a bit of pain too. Did anyone else have this happen to them?
Thank you.

I have the same problem. I am finding that the pain meds are help me. And I only take about 1/4 of what they said I should take.

Did you have a hernia in your esophagus repaired too? I figured that was what was hurting the most for me.

I had surgery on 10/30. I had that feeling if I drank to fast and if it was cold. Just drink maybe smaller sips.

I also had surgery on 10/30 and found that the first week I could only sip from a medicine cup. This week has been better but I have been very careful to take small sips from a normal size cup. I have a huge fear of over doing it and throwing up.

I was 10/24 and had a little trouble swallowing for 2 or 3 days. Now that I'm two weeks out, regular drinking doesn't bother me. I'm not chugging anything but I can drink a cup or so of liquid in 15 minutes or less.

Thanks all! I was a bit worried. But now I know it is a normal issue.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
