How hard is it to lose more weight after 1 year post-op?

Recommended Posts

Hello friends! I had my 1 year post-op appointment yesterday. Today is officially be 1 year. Wow, it doesn't seem like that much time has passed! I'm down a little over 100 lbs. The doctor was very pleased with my progress and said that I was right on track. Yay! I'm so glad I did this surgery and I feel so blessed. I told him that I wanted to lose another 20-30 lbs and then maintain at that weight from that point on. He told me that it CAN be done but he also stressed that it would be a BIG challenge and much harder to get the weight off. He explained that most people hit the maintenance stage at 1 year post-op and the body pretty much stops losing weight. So...I wanted to ask those of you who are more than 1 year post-op, how much more weight did you lose after the 1 year mark and how long did it take to shed the weight?

Well, I am far from being a year postop but just thought I'd share there is no special anatomical or physiological reason why it gets harder to lose weight after a year, other than weight loss and maintenance being difficult challenges for obese people in general. If you continue following the post-op diet and exercise you will lose the last little bit of weight, it will just take a lot longer since you have a lot less left to lose. It helps to keep in mind that surgeons are often going off of their own patient statistics when they say things like "most people" experience or do this or that, rather than their assessment of your personal progress. It doesn't mean you will fall short of your goal just because other people have. Congratulations on a 100 lb loss! That's a huge accomplishment for sure! Can't wait til I'm in your place!

If you keep your exercise/activity level up and follow guidlines there is no reason you can't go down to those goofy chart statistics and reach "normal".

I lost at least another 20 pounds after one year and thought I had stopped at 10 pounds under goal but lost another 2 pounds this week. I am a year and nine months out. My week contained carrying 80 pound sacks of cement, mixing them in a wheelbarrow, and dumping it in post holes for 6 hours. Just your normal day for a 64 year old man. B)

I agree with the above posts. There is no reason the weight loss should stop at one year. Good luck!

I don't know the answer, but I am in the same boat - you are not alone. My one year anniversary is tomorrow, and I have lost 103 pounds, but want to lose 37 more. It is going to require hard work, but I'm optimistic that we can do this!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
