Don't you hate when doctors blame everything on your weight?

Recommended Posts

I've always hated going to the doctor because any ache or pain was always due to weight. It's like they couldnt look past the weight, assess the symptoms and treat you. Hated, hated, hated it. It's one of the reasons i never went frequently. Fortunately i dont get sick much but I have to wonder how many often they misdiagnose people because of this BS behavior. Anyone else deal with this?

All the time. I suffer from RA but whenever I go to a doctor it;s always my weight to blame. One even told me - when I said I had trouble walking - that I didn;'t deserve to walk since I was so fat. My sister on the other hand who's only 137 lbs went to the same doctor with the same symptoms and he ordered a whole bunch of tests to determine the cause. Me, i didn't even get a physical let alone lab tests. This behaviour should be included in the law against racismThere is a lot more to racism than just skin colour. We should be able to sue these people

Last year I was getting freaked out that my iud had moved around or adhered. The stupid gyno I went to never even examined me that day, but she announced that I needed to lose weight (duh) and demanded to know what I ate for Breakfast every day. I told her I was on Jenny Craig, and she proceed to tell me to eat a yogurt every morning. I was like you have GOT to be effing kidding me. The whole time she lectured me, she was looking at me like I was poop on the bottom of her shoe. You would think she would have done an exam if I was concerned about iud adhesion!!! Not that I ever want to have to beg for a pelvic exam lol. So I went to a much better dr a week later, got my exam, and all was well.

But seriously...wth!!!

Yup. Back in 2007 I was feeling constantly sick, nauseated, etc. so I was frequently missing work and going to the doctor. She kept telling me to lose weight, blah blah... anyway, turns out I had a bad case of ovarian cysts. One finally ruptured and required emergency surgery as I had gone septic. After the cysts were removed, I felt wonderful. If she had taken me seriously the first time I went to see her, maybe I could have avoided the pain of the rupture and cost of the surgery (which is still dinging my credit report because I couldn't afford it :/).

Yes. Sadly, it doesn't go away even when you consider yourself normal! I'm short (5'1") so my current weight of 145 is still overweight. I went in for treatment for endometriosis and couldn't believe my new PCM told me I should really consider shedding some weight. Because, you know, I should weigh between 97 and 127 pounds at my height!! To top it off, I had given birth five months earlier!

Yes, I wanted to shout and scream and resort to violence. Nothing like feeling defeated after working hard to lose weight.

In my experience, those in the medical profession are the worst about this. Rather than do some simple tests, let's just tell someone to lose weight and exercise. Because surely, we've never tried that option before, right?

I suffer with chronic back pain due to degenerate disk disease. Before I lost my weight, the doc encouraged me to lose weight and I would feel better. Ok, why do My back feel just as bad as when I had the weight on. Anyway, just needed to vent as I take these pain meds and put this ten unit on.

That's just the worst. I went to the ER for pain and actually got laughed at. No imaging, nothing - they didn't take me seriously at all and the doctor acted like he didn't want to touch me. Wound up being a giant ovarian mass and a twisted tube. I didn't get treated until I went to a different ER, and by then it had wrapped around my intestines and I almost died. You'd think anyone who goes to medical school would come out understanding that they're going to have fat patients from time to time, and they may even have to touch them!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
