Yes, another "is this normal?" post

Recommended Posts

OK, I've been back to work 4 full days and we're 90 minutes into the 5th day. I took 12 days off work after the surgery, and for the most part, things are going along like I expected.

What I did NOT expect was this near-constant pain at my port incision site.

It feels like my port is rubbing constantly on the incision from the inside out. Sometimes it's sharper than others, but it's always a sharp pain.

Is this normal? If so, how much longer is it going to take to stop hurting? I seem to be always holding my stomach so the port doesn't rub and people think I'm in trouble when I do that *rolls eyes* so I spend half my time reassuring everyone I'm ok.

It hurts when I walk, when I stand, when I drive...the only time it doesn't hurt is when I first get up.

The port area is going to be sensitive for a very long times, I mean months. As far as sharp pain a month later, let your doctor know. Are still taking some pain meds? liquid Tylenol was good to me.

*groan*

I was afraid someone would say that.

No, no pain meds - have to stay coherent for work. It's worse during the day than in the evening, but will take some Tylenol at night.

Guess what, that is good to hear that it is normal. You didn't want to hear something crazy did you. Noooo so suck it up cowgirl and you will be healed in no time and running around after all the office work they can throw at you. I hope you get some rest this evening and the weekend.

I'm only 10 days post op but the port site hurts more than I expected as well.

Forgive the description but I have a belly that tends to hang a little (ok maybe more than a little) and this seems to put pressure on the port site. I still can't sleep on my port side and forget trying to stay on all fours for long. Most of my steri-strips are about to come off but the port ones are still snugly on there. Port pain is the only reason I still take pain medication (Tylenol).

sigh!

What's funny is almost literally, the very next day after that post, the port incision pretty much quite hurting. There is a twinge of pain here and there, but for the most part, the near-constant pain has vanished!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
