December 2013 Sleevers Come In!

Recommended Posts

OMG! 16 Dec.2nd Sleevers!!! My hats off to all my December 2nd sisters/brothers who have made it this far on their pre-op diet. To everyone else who is with me that starts tomorrow. We can't let them or ourselves down. I've been a mad women (in my mind) since Friday. But I won my weekend battle. Instead of going all out for my "last supper" I restrained. Friday I did a shake for Breakfast, a small salad for lunch and a very light dinner. Saturday I had two shakes, a hand full of chips (I couldn't eat just one), a small slice of birthday cake, and two bites of a pork chop. Today I did my two shakes, a cup of broth (from my sons Soup at lunch, a piece of boneless chicken thigh and a spoon of broccoli. Oh let me not forget the half of cupcake. This has not been easy. Everything in me wanted to go to the Texas Roadhouse. I'm already having crazy headaches. The real challenge is yet to come. My son and I are flying out in the morning to D.C. I have to survive a week of my family drinking and eating. This is going to be a true test of how much I want to change my life.

Bring it on!!!

Good luck to all and keep pushing ahead!

Man, this 6th day on the liquid diet is tough. I made it through but I've been thinking about food ALL DAY!

I ended up cleaning out my closet and going to Goodwill. I've lost almost 27 lbs pre-op now and I'm getting rid of all the "fat clothes". It kept my mind off eating and was somewhat liberating.

How am I going to do this another week with Thanksgiving??? Ugh!

Tomorrow is my crazy long day of VSG fun! Upper GI at 9 at one hospital, Pre-op class at 11 at my surgeon's office, and then I head to the hospital where I'm having surgery. Not sure how long everything is supposed to last but I suspect it's going to be a long day. The one good thing is even though I have to go to 3 different places, they are all on the same campus and within walking distance from each other.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow but part of me is also like, what if they find something wrong? But I guess that's why they're doing it 3 weeks before surgery - so if something like h. pylori shows up I have time to treat it.

I don't know if I should be happy or sad that I don't have to do a liquid diet for my surgery. They told me to just fast from midnight the night before. Hmmm. Should I do my own liquid diet?

At first, I was told I wouldn't have a preop. I was going to do a self-imposed 3 day liquid diet before the surgery. Now, I have to do the 2 week. I was upset at first, but I've wrapped my brain around it and I'm ready for it.

Maybe I should do the 3 day diet too. My sister had the same doctor and she didn't have to do it either.

So happy you are joining us in December, I just know we are all going to help each other through this! I started out by only telling my immediate family. As I got closer to the date, I told my co-workers. I work as a nurse and heavily rely on my coworkers during the day to support me, physically, and emotionally as we help our patients. I decided because we see so much of each other, in and out of work, I would share it with them. They have been so supportive, even to the point where they are going to join me in my liquid lunch this week to show their support for me!! I love these girls and couldn't imaging not having their support. That being said, I am telling no one else. It is such a personal decision, and I don't want to deal with the comments, feelings, and what not of those who don't support me. I did tell one friend who absolutely does not support this, and sadly our friendship is fading fast. No one can tell you what to do as far as telling or not, it just has to feel right for you!!

I totally understand. I told a couple friends and they started crying!! then they spent the rest of the day trying to convince me that surgery is too extreme for my age (27). Its hard for outsiders to get how truly disabling it is to be overweight. I tried to explain how the risks of me living with a bmi of 58 is soo much more dangerous than surgery. Good luck to you and your friend, im sure they will be more supportive when they see how it has changed your life for the better!

I'm not ashamed of the surgery. I just don't want to hear any negative comments or horror stories, and it just isn't anyone's business what I'm doing to my own body.

I also feel like some people think WLS is the easy way out or a quick fix when you could just tough it out. Sort of like how people are so judgmental about giving medication to kids with ADHD. It's not anyone's business but the family and the doctor. People can take their opinions and shove 'em. :)

i agree, and im not proud of this but i used to say the same thing. I was on a 900cal diet for a year without any surgery and i said that about a coworker. Today, she has kept the weight off and i gained 100lbs. Now im in a different mindset and can see how much more permanent this can be for me. Im soo excited and thrilled to get this experience to start over!

MnWin - what is "Playaway"?

Hi Chefcoll

Here is the link to "Playaway". This was offered by my surgeon's office (and recommended at the psych eval as well) for those who either have anxiety, or think they might have anxiety. Apparently, from what I was told on Friday, you start listening to it once or twice a day prior to your surgery, and then they even apparently have you listening to it during the surgery as well.

http://healthcare.playaway.com/

I have listened to it quite a bit since Friday...it's not too bad if you are in to guided imagery..and I sure do sleep well when I have it on. :)

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
