Is this a complication?

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have a question. I was recently plicated 2 weeks ago - 7/11/2013 with Dr. Chock at NWWLS in Everett, WA. I have lost about 26 lbs since my starting weight (1 week before surgery). So that's great...however...I have major gas/burping problems. At first I thought the gas pain was from the CO2 they pump in during surgery. Now, every time I take a sip of Water or try to eat a bite of yogurt, my throat makes weird noise, my tummy gurgles, I burp a lot, terrible gas!! What is up with this?? Is it normal to still have it really bad 2 weeks out? They didn't warn me about this at all and it prevents me from eating or drinking anything more than 2 sips or bites without major gas.

Hi! This is exactly my issue and I had my surgery July 8, 2013. I would even get chest pains after every sip. The pain has gone away but I took the issue up with the doctor and a plication nutrition specialist and both said its normal and it's bc the pouch is still right and this is your body's way of saying the pouch is full. My symptoms are starting to get better and I'm sure yours will too. Good luck!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
