Hi Everyone,

I am new to the whole Lap band thing. My weight has skyrocketted ever since I took a desk job. I really do try to get out and stay active but the older I get and the heavier I get, the less I want to do. I've never before considered having surgery to control my weight but it seems like every time I try a diet, I end up even heavier than before I started. I have no insurance to cover the surgery and don't have $16,000 to $24,000 laying around. Is Mexico an option? Have any of you had the procedure done there. At first I was like"NO WAY!" But the more I research it, the more OK it seems. Am I just being desparate? Please tell me what you know.

Tim

I had it done there and would highly recommend it. I received the best medical care in a state of the art facility. There is lots of info on here...maybe try searching the word 'Mexico' for more info. Good luck!

I'm also self pay and considering Mexico. My husband is worried that if there are complications (infection or whatever) that my insurance will not cover that treatment since it was caused by a procedure that wasn't covered in the first place. Does anyone know about that? My main concern is that some complication will cause the costs to skyrocket, whether I get this done in Mexico or the U.S.

It was fabulous. I had never even been to Mexico and don't speak a word of English. I contacted www.ready4achange.com and they take care of every single step for you. They email you the paperwork, book your flights, Dr. Zapata does your surgery and he's done more than 7000. He trained in Houston and has proctored many US Surgeons. They provide surgery, preop testing, all transportation and your food while your they're. All hospital charges, your stay the night before surgery, and two nights after, and free fills for life. They are wonderful. 8500.00 for everything and right now there's a special with 7500.00 for everything. You can be in and have your surgery within 2 weeks if you want it that soon, that's what I did. PM me if you have any questions. Oh, he does his surgeries at Santa Agracias Hospital which is a full huge, hospital with trauma unit, same place President Bush would go if he needed hospital while in Mexico, not a clinic where a lot of people use.

I too am going to get LapBand outside of USA due to expense - I did a lot of research and will be going to Italy next month (surgery date is 3/28) - I really wanted this surgeon as he was one of the original surgeons in Europe to use LapBand and unlike USA has been doing the procedure since the late 80s. The surgery there is $11,000 US - so even with the flights, hotel, etc. I come out at less than $15,000, which is $20,000 less than here in Northern Cal - Looking forward to the surgery, but getting more nervous as the time approachs - wish me luck!

I too had mine done in Acuna, Mexico by Dr Rodriguez.-joseband.com, My band cost 7000 and went well. I did have complications and I went back and he put me back in the hospital and took care of me (included in the cost) for 2 days. What I liked was that he was within a 5 hr car ride if need be and not so expensive. He also has a lot of experience and a good reputation. I knew numerous people who he had banded and I also saw them looking good. It is worth it if you are ready to change your life! Check him out.:)

I was self pay and had mine done in Mexicali Mexico, by Dr. Aceves. I couldn't have been more pleased with my experience. The surgeon, his staff, the hospital, their staff---were all wonderful!!

I would not hesitate to take my own Mom or Daughter to have it done if they were to need it....

Sit him down and let him read through some of LBT---or ask your US Dr. who trained him in the procedure and where. I used a surgeon in MX, for my surgery as I said, but I use a US Dr. for my aftercare, and he was trained in laproscopic surgery in general, by one Mexican Dr., then trained in banding by another Mexican Dr. maybe that is why he doesn't have issue with doing my aftercare. My surgeon helped me set up all different levels of aftercare prior to surgery. I live in a rural area, even the band Dr. I use for fills is a 10 hour round trip. So he even set me up to speak with a local oncologist, in case I needed an emergency unfill---as they are quite comfortable accessing ports. It is up to you to do your homework---but it can be done safely. Look up the statistics----they rank right up there!

Good Luck---there is such a stigma---and much of it fairly applied, that it is a struggle to make a decision, I know, been there!!!!!

If cost is the only reason for choosing Mexico there is an alternative. My doc in Denver CO, Gerald Kirshenbaum, does the band for self pay patients for $9950.00. He has done thousands of laproscopic surgeries over the years and started doing bands a few years ago. I have been very happy with him and know of several other bandsters here on LBT that have had their bands done by him.

I would be happy to answer any questions you have about him!

Maybe you could print this thread and others like it, as well as the information on line regarding the clinic you are considering. Once he has done his research as well, he will be equipped to make an educated decision. If he is still concerned, maybe he can come with you to make sure everything is OK. I am sure he is so concerned because he loves you, but he also needs to trust that you know what is best for your health. My husband was worried as well, now he acts like the whole Mexico thing was his idea! lol.

Best wishes!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
