Am I the only person that did NOT have to do the two week liquid diet, before surg? Wonder why. I assume different docs do different things but it seems like everybody else has to..... 4 days and counting!

My doctor requires a certain amount of weight loss before surgery to shrink the liver, so no liquid diet. The nut says you have to get used to modifications before surgery because "he's not operating on your brain " as she likes to point out.

Yeah, that's the same mine said. He said low fat this last week so the liver will shrink.

OK. At least I know somebody else's is the same. :) Thanks!

No liquid pre-op diet for me either. In fact my surgeon made it simple and to the point - "Lose 20 lbs pre-op or no surgery." That was it. No diet. No recommendations. Just do it.

To this day I have never asked her what her reasoning is behind her approach but she does a LOT of bariatric surgeries so it apparently works. I know it did for me - I lost 35 lbs from my first meeting with her to my surgery date. I've often wondered if doctors who require the pre-op liquid diet waive that requirement for patients who lose the required pre-op weight on their own.

I had to do the 2 week shake evilness for both my band and my RNY. For my band I was told to lose 10 pounds 'or else', for my RNY I was just told to lose something. Same surgeon. I assume its because I was smaller RNY ore-RNY but I've often wondered if it wasn't because I'd already proven myself to him.

HW 312, pre-op (RNY) 255, current weight 204.2

I wasn't told to lose anything. I think I've gained a couple lbs cuz of my farewell-to-food tour and NOT being told any different. Just low-fat this last week. I hope I'm good enough to go in 3 days!

I have to do the 2 week liver shrink but NO other diet or required weight loss before surgery. The liver shrink isn't totally liquid. It's Protein Shakes and bars, 3oz of meat, salad, yougurt, unlimited non starchy veges and baked potatoes on my liver shrink and fruit.< /p>

My surgeon requires a pre op diet but not liquid. Carb count cannot exceed 30gm and must get 85-100gm of Protein. The 24hrs before surgery is the only liquid day. I'm so happy I can have food!

I didn't have a preop diet. Just wasn't allowed to gain weight. And had to do just Clear Liquids the day before.

I had I lose 20-30lbs and still a 2 week liquid diet. I didn't lose quite 20lbs so my surgeon put me on a 3 week liquid diet to lose extra weight.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
