Is your port painful? What is hurting on my left side?

Recommended Posts

I was banded 02/08/07, and feel great except for my left side below my rib cage. I assume this is my port, although there is not an incision anywhere near it. I will wake myself up at night if I move just right, or still getting up from bed or a chair has a SHARP pinch knifelike pain. :cry I know the first month is the healing time, but I just wondered if anyone else felt like this. It doesnt matter if I am hungry or full and I have never had an issue of getting sick yet, so I think it is more my port then the band. I keep reading these site talking about the importance of the stitches healing and wonder if I am pulling mine or if this is normal.

Thank you to anyone who replies. As with all the postings, I think it helps us all to know there are others out there and no one is doing this alone!

So funny you should mention this...I've been complaining about this myself. I was banded on 2/12, just went back to work today, and as you said, except for the port feeling like it's jabbing into my ribcage, I feel good! Wouldn't you think the Dr. could see it was kind of close. Seems like dropping the port a bit would be so much smarter. After pushing and rubbing it all day due to the dull pain, I think I've made it even more sore. Maybe when we're laid out on a table, it doesn't seem so close? I feel like I've had to sit straight up in my chair all day long. Made for a tiring day. Whew! So glad I'm not the only one..you know..misery loves company! Maybe we're still swollen in there and it will get better soon?

I was banded 12/20 by Dr. B too! I also had the same sharp pain you are experiencing for the first two or three weeks then it went away. It's worrying I know, especially since the locus of the pain is nowhere near any of the incisions or the port!

I was banded 1/31. Relax, it will get better. I didn't (couldn't) sleep in bed for 5 days. Then didn't sleep on my left side (favorite sleeping position) for another week. It's the port that they sew into the muscle. I'm 3 weeks out today and feel great. I only feel it occasionally, no pain. Even the itching is gone. Doc said it's my belly hair regrowing.

I was banded 11/29/06. I asked my doc about this burning horrific pain on my left side. I couldn't lie down on that side and it downright hurt. He said that what he thought it was was they have to move the other organs out of the way over there. He figures they scrape it and then the blood pools there causing the pain. Well, that's his answer so I went with it. It does get better. Also, I believe all ports are located in the center between the rib cages.

I totally had that pain for a few weeks but then it went away. It took a while, though. Hang in there- it will get better!!

Here's my 2 cents:rolleyes: , I also was banded 1/30 and just about a week later I got this sharp pain, but mine felt closer to the port sight. I had gotten up from a chair to fast and felt the pain it lasted a few days on and off , then one night, the pain was so bad it woke me up from a sound sleep:omg: . That was the last time I had pain. I get up a little slower now from the chair. I'm healing great no more black n blue and no tenderness and my scars are healing great.:clap2: I'm now using Scar Zone every day and night to fade the scars and its working..:clap2:

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
