I am 17 weeks out from RNY today. I've lost 65 pounds, my goal is to lose 132, maybe a bit more. I'm worried though, because for the second half of the 17 weeks I'm only losing a pound or two a week. Some weeks nothing. At this rate I won't lose what I need to lose during my malabsorption window. I get about 800 cals/day, all my Protein & Water. I religiously track my food & exercise, don't cheat at all, although I do have some whole grain carbs daily, so I'm not carb free. I do cardio 4-6 X a week & do weights every other gym visit. I was a complete couch potato PRE op (in my defense I have MS which makes me very tired & morbid obesity did not help), so I know I'm building lean muscle which weighs heavier. I guess I'm just discouraged & making myself insane. My intellectual brain knows that I've gone from a size 28 to an 18-20 in 17 weeks but it's been another week with nothing lost. So discouraging!! Am I crazy & I should just shut up & be grateful?

i have weeks like that as well....and have since about 5 months...I am almost a year out now and have slowed down a good bit. But I stick to the plan, stay the course and wait for results. I know that I am working hard, and that is SO much better than preop!

Keep up the good work!! It'll work out....

How much weight would you expect to lose, if you were doing WW, Nutrisystems, etc., in one month? Most programs and doctors recommend five lbs a month, it is easier to maintain and keep off then losing a lot very fast. So you have been doing a great job. I have read where people are still losing at three years with bypass which is good because they are working the tool and thus they continue to lose, not gain, and eventually maintain and not put it back on. Just remember who won the race, the turtle or the rabbit so be patient you will succeed? Also, you may have to either increase calories for a few weeks to adjust your metabolism as it also becomes a "couch potato" and gets use to the calories you are taking in and the excerise you are doing. I was "chewed on" because I wasn't losing and when they asked how much I was eating, 600 calories, they told me that wasn't enough as I had put my metabolism into starvation mode and I wouldn't lose until I increased the calories, I did and lost another five pounds. So I up and down my calories when I stall. Just keep it up, you will succeed, just look at the bigger picture, you didn't put on all those pounds in 17 weeks, so don't expect it to come off that fast either. But you have a great tool now, that is helping you, you'll get there. You are doing fantastic.

Your post could have been mine... I put my scale away in the closet this week, and have washed my hands of it. I am doing everything exactly as I should, including exercising faithfully, and have seen a slow loss. However, since I am doing everything correctly, it makes sense that I have to lose weight eventually, and I can't let the scale become a derailment.

Shut up and be grateful - LOL! Stay focused on doing exactly what you've been doing, stay active and stay away from the scales. When you're doing everything exactly right, there are times when you simply have to let your body find its own way in its own time. Sounds like it's just taking a little break. You've thrown a lot at it in a short period of time. Just keep doing what you're doing and you are gonna love the new you!!

Not exactly sure what you mean by 'malabsorption window'....I was always told the malabsorption will last forever.

Hence the reason for taking supplements for life....(or so I thought?)

You are thought to have a malabsorption component that lasts for 18 months or so. This is the malabsorption of calories, fat etc (macronutrients). Malabsorption of micronutrients (Vitamins and minerals) lasts forever.

Don't worry original poster - just stay on course :-)

OK. I'm going to try & not weigh tomorrow morning. Not sure I can quite put it in the closet yet. Thanks for the sane words everyone!

scales are evil, evil creatures...they can't differentiate fat from muscle, from poop, from Fluid retention. Use them as a guide, generally they'll point you in the right direction and help you watch for trends in a bad way(or good!!) but try not to live your life obsessing about what the numbers are or may be! You are doing fabulously, don't let the scale beat you down.

And very true! I don't even keep my scale at home. I leave it at my boyfriends house and only weigh myself once a week.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
