I'm currently five days out. I had RNY, my gallbladder removed, and a hernia repaired.

I am still quite bloated. My weight is about 2-3 pounds higher now than on the day of surgery, due to all the fluids they pumped into me. I'm doing quite well, but getting up from a flat position is still very hard. My husband heads back to work tomorrow, and he's been helping me get up, so I'm a little worried. Any tips for me?

Do you have a recliner you could sleep in?

I would roll Over on my side, push my torso up with my arms while swinging my legs down off the edge of the bed. That was my technique from day 2. By about day 8-9 it was no longer an issue. Good luck!!!!

I got out of bed the same way and never needed anyone to help. My bed is pretty high so I also used a step stool to climb into it at night.

Same here. I need a step stool to get into bed but getting out I just roll over and slide out. Lol

Elevate your upper body with a couple of more pillows (might be uncomfortable to sleep for a while until you get used to it but worth to beat up the pain), have a step stool at your side at all times and a cane.

You can find a cheap reliable cane at any RX or store.

Feel better soon. :)

Thanks for all if the advice. Rolling onto my side first does seem to help. Not sure why I hadn't thought of that. It helps that the pain continues to subside. Good luck to all and thanks again!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
