Hello! My name is Carrie Hickman. I am a gastric bypass patient, and now a PhD student studying gastric bypass experiences.

I have Alex Brecher's special permission to invite you to be a part of my PhD dissertation study. It's just 15 questions that I email to you and will focus on your experiences since weight loss surgery. The study is completely confidential, secure and your identity will not be published or divulged in any way. Please email me if you are interested in participating, or know anyone who might be. I am looking for people at least 18 years old, who have lost weight as well as those who have not lost weight or may have regained it. Participation is strictly voluntary. Thank you. My email address is: carrie.hickman@waldenu.edu

Hi, I just emailed you from my school email. :D Yes, I send out results to the participants, but as I told you in the email, I am also committed to make sure that anything you (or anyone) says to me that ends up in the study is complete, accurate and in context. So, long before it is published, you will have ample opportunities to review anything I am quoting that you might say, to make sure I have captured your exact words and intentions. If you decide that you want me to withdraw something, I will without question. And no names or identities will be used, so no one will know who I am talking about. I'm committed to excellence in my work and to the highest ethical standard. I want to tell the real stories of people's experiences so that we can all understand this process better.

I hope that helps! Thanks for asking the question! It's not often I get to share all that.

Carrie

Hi everyone my name is Mimi, I had surgery on April 2, 2013. I am still very sore and I can't wait to return back to work next week. My surgery went well, I also had my gallbladder taken out at the same time. 2 weeks after surgery I began having excruciating belly pain with movement. I went back to the ER and found that I has adhesion wrapping around my small intestines. That was fixed fairly quickly and so far so good. I am losing weight, down 34 lbs so far. I'm excited and very nervous at the same time.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
