1/4 cup portion size?

Recommended Posts

Was anyone else given the 1/4 cup portion size guideline and find it to not be enough? I am just starting on soft foods, ate some tuna salad and mozzarella cheese, what turned out to be more like 1/2 cup. I did get full on that amount, but it didnt feel like too much like some have described (having pain, cramps etc after eating). I felt comfortable and that was twice what I should have eaten! I read the thread about what everyone is eating and I see pictures and people describe what they ate and many seem to be eating more than 1/4 cup! What's up with this? I cannot imagine only eating that much for several more months but I don't want to be stretching my pouch or anything. Anyone have any insight to this?

The 1/4 cup is a must at your stage because the nerve endings are not healed in your pouch to tell of its overfull or not. Eating more at one time can cause staple line leaks and can cause pain as it does take a few months to heal. About 4-6 months out you will be able to eat 1/2 cup or more

I'm on the second stage as well. My diet plan is 1/4-1/2 cup puréed food at each meal along with two 8oz Protein shakes for Snacks. Seem that depending on where you have had your surgery, The meal plans vary slightly. For example, I'm not allowed cheese at this stage and was instructed if its not on your plan don't eat it!

Don't worry... Just set your phone to remind you to eat and only eat then and exactly what the doctor wants.

Good luck

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
