Questions about first few days post-op.

Recommended Posts

I have a few questions about the first few days after surgery:

1. Do you need a support person with you 24/7 during the day after surgery? The second day?

2. I have heard people say that a support undergarment (like Spanx) will help with pain the first few days. Do you need the Spanx that are super high waisted or just the regular underwear Spanx?

3. Can you sleep on your side after surgery, or just on your back?

4. When can you shower after surgery?

Thanks,

Leslie

1-i did not need a support person, I had one but she tried to make me lazy :) a lot of people say they need help getting up, it was painful but I never had someone help me out of bed or off the couch.

2-dunno, didn't use em

3-I was sleeping on my side the very first night with a pillow in front of me I put some of my weight on....was flat on my tummy by 4-5 days post-op (I cannot sleep on my back to save my life...)

4-depends on the doc and how he dresses your surgical sites, I had a shower the day after surgery and it was HEAVEN...my doc uses steri-strips them covers them with an op-site waterproof clear bandage...I was allowed to have the Water spray directly on em, wash around the area but not scrub the bandages....FYI that first shower, while fabulous, was exhausting!!! Do not attempt unless you have someone around just in case!!

Good luck!!!! It's really pretty freaking awesome!!!

HW 312, pre-op (lap-band) 294, pre-op (RNY) 255, surgery date 2/11/13, goal weight 154, current weight 226.6

1. If you can, it'll make life easier. Seriously easier. [Thank you Sweetheart!]

2. I think a compression garment would hurt, not help.

3. Yes, but I "built a nest" around me with pillows so that I wouldn't move much [to avoid hurting myself]

4. I had to wait until I got out of the hospital [5 days as I had complications/needed transfusions]. That shower was the most heavenly feeling in the world. [Agreeing with SoccerMomma]

Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
