Drinking

Recommended Posts

Guest Joe Tornielli

Just joined the forum and am 1 week post op :)

Question is.....Is it common to drink 8+ ounces within 15-20 minutes? Those 1oz cups keep me dehydrated. My pouch doesn't hurt and everything seems good.

Sorry if this was covered before somewhere in the forum.

I couldnt drink that much 1 week out. Remember the nerve endings of your pouch are still healing so follow whatever your doctor recomends as far as drinking. I was just told to sip sip sip. So that's what I did. I was so out of it those first few weeks that I didnt measure anything but never was dehydrated so honestly dont know how many ounces I was drinking at the time. Welcome to the boards. Congrats on your surgery.

Joe- I drink a lot. Right out of surgery I was given two glasses of ice chips and I ate them both. They then gave me broth. I am currently 12days post op and drinking fluids like crazy. My doc said its a good thing. Every one is different. Good luck!

I'm 1 month post op and to this day I still can't drink more than 4 oz in an hour and I have to drink less than an ounce at at time or ill get stomach ache, so go slowly on the drinking cause you don't want your pouch to expand. Good luck and welcome to the experience that will change your life and make you a better and healthier you. :)

I too was under the impression as long as you aren't taking huge gulps you'll be fine. Physiologically I can't see how liquids would stretch a pouch. They're going to follow the path of least resistance and that would be up or down, not stretching.....but then I'm not a doctor :)

I'm not a doctor either but I'm just saying what my doctor had told me, I guess every doctor is different so just ask your doctor to see if its ok.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
