Questions I should ask my surgeon

Recommended Posts

Ok, Dr. appt this afternoon. Any suggestion as to what questions I should ask? I've got a list but maybe I missed something. I can bring the answers back and share them with the group.

I asked my surgeon if he routinely cuts the vegus nerve. No one really knows what it does, but I asked him not to cut mine.

Its a large nerve that runs from your brain into your chest and down into your abdomen. (If anyone has more info on it please feel free to correct me.) I was told by my surgeon that most surgeons do staple across it when doing a rny.

It does a zillion things, slows down your heart rate if its over stimulated (people that pass out when the have blood taken are referred to as vaso-vegalling-out...the vegal nerve hyper stimulates and slows their heart rate way down and boom. It also innervates the viscera surrounding your abdominal organs. If its way off Kelter it will slow your gut down big time too. My vegal nerve had an issue with my lap band. And caused constant chest and shoulder pain...,a constant heaviness that as miserable and never went away until the band came out.....once it was out I was in heaven.

Luckily with laparoscopic surgeries you can visualize the nerve better so rarely do they mess with it any more.

HW 312, pre-op (lap-band) 294, pre-op (RNY) 255, surgery date 2/11/13, goal weight 154, current weight 241.6

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
