OK to sleep on my port side?

Recommended Posts

I can not for the life of me sleep at night in the bed. I tried on my right side last night; woke up with spasms in my back muscles. I guess b/c I'm trying to compensate and keep the left side safe and not lay on it. I'm normally a left side sleeper! sleeping flat on my back isn't working either. The reclineer, I swear is making my back feel even worse.

Anyone else experience this back/muscular pain now? I guess it has to do with me walking funny also; I'm still not feeling totally upright.

I experienced the same problems. I had my surgery on January 17th, and I'm happy to report that I can now sleep on my left side without any problems at all. It was too painful in the beginning for me to sleep on either side and, like you, sleeping on my back gave me back spasms. Just give it some time and you'll be sleeping better again.

sherilyn - sorry u are still having problems - lack of sleep is terrible and people don't usually understand how awful that is - really sorry for you! I don' t think therer is any probs sleeping on your side - i couldn't do it for almost a year and by then i started sleeping on my other side. i also started sleeping somewhere between laying on my stomach and side - just keep experimenting and if you can take naps - do anything to get your rest in as I know that can make you crazy. i promise it will get better

sleeping comfortably was a big problem for me, too. And if I don't sleep well, I don't heal well. I'm 17 days post-op and still cannot sleep on my stomach. I got some Ambien and took one each night for the first 10 days. That helped immensely. I was able to sleep soundly on my back, which I normally can't do. I just love modern medicine.

I do have my Ambien, but wasn't sure it was such a great idea, considering I'm still taking percocet. I guess this is a question for my surgeon.

Try putting a pillow under the side you want to sleep on. Thats what I did. I still have trouble sleeping on my side but the pillow works good.

I slept in a recliner for about a week or more after my LP was put in.

I asked my doctor how delicate the port is. He told me not to get into any boxing matches.

I took Ambien with Darvocet and didn't have any problems. Your pharmacist could probably tell you if you can take Ambien and percocet together.

There's no getting around it- unless you were a back sleeper, you'll have an uncomfortable two or so weeks. The best things I did were to use a pregnancy pillow- the U-Shaped kind. I could put my knees up with it, thereby relieving back pressure and it allowed me to be braced on both sides for mild shifting. The other thing was to take tylenol PM. It comes in liquid form so you can get it down. SLowly, you should be able to shift from one side to the next. It took me a month to stomach sleep again.

I won't bother to say "good luck" because you don't need it. You'll be fine in due time! :P

Ok...so here I am; one Ambien later. I'm really hoping this works. I was a little nervous, but my last percocet was at 7:00...and it's nearly 11.

I just want 5 hours uninterrupted!

I am ever so happy to report that I slept like a baby! A full 7.5 UNINTERUPTED hours of sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't do that without a port in my side! hehehe.

Ambien, I love you. hehehe

Glad I took it. I guess I was afraid of my new pouch handling the effects differently.

Isn't it wonderful? I've tried Tylenol PM before and wake up so groggy I can hardly function. With Ambien, I wake up alert and fully rested. I think it's the best stuff ever made.

I will say it again - most people do not realize how serious it is when one can not sleep. I've had ups and downs in life but am not one to get seriously depressed BUT when I couldn't sleep I was rready to kill myself. My doc suggested warm milk and I almost killed him - I don't know how some people can stand it - lack of sleep can make one crazy. i am sooo glad you got some rest.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
