I am having RNY in 3 weeks and am starting to think about getting stocked up for my recovery and new healthy lifestyle. I would like to know:

What types of things helped with wound care?

What Protein sources you liked best?

What did you buy to eat (or should I say for nourishment?

Thanks!

I was thinking the same way u r I had Jello, sport drinks like G2 and clear whey Protein and when I came home the Jello was 2 sweet and the same with the sport drinks and the Popsicles just didn't taste good so I just stuck with plain Water for the first week.

For the wound care I just had steri-strips (no sutures or staples). When I left the hospital my surgeon said to not touch anything until he sees me in 3 weeks so I just left well enogh alone. The steri-strips hold your wound closed so they really stick and they covered the incision totally. I only took off the gauze and put Neosporen then a bandaid. Once I had my 3 wk. check up he took all the bandages off and I was OK.

Stock up on the 16.9 oz bottles of Water... I knew I had to drink 4 a day to get my required Water so each day I would mark 4 bottles with 1, 2, 3 & 4 so I would not foget how many I had - lol. Since you cannot lift anything heavy for a while I bought like 10 cases !!!! (I live alone).

Protein: My surgeons office recommended Isopure, I tried other Proteins but I always go back to Isopure. Stay away from the Protein shots, they are discusting !!!!

I was on liquid diet for 2 wks.. so when I was able to eat soft, I stocked up on Soups, yogurts, cottage cheese.

GOOD LUCK on your surgery !!

start looking for some liquid tylenol, you may need it for a headache or something. and it can be hard to find or some drug stores just don't seem to keep it in stock. so If you find it get a couple of bottles.< /p>

some of the crystal light packets in a few flavors in case plain Water gets boring. and whatever you love right now might not be what you like then.

and the Isopure is a bit pricey so you might want to watch for GNC to have it on sale and buy it over the next three weeks, different flavors. again what tastes good now, may not then.

sending you the best thoughts possible.

Definitely find a few Protein shakes that you like. It's a good start. You may not want them after the surgery but, you have to start somewhere so find a few now.

Check out your nutritionist recommendations for the food stage you'll be on when you get home. I used my list and took it to the grocery store to stock up on things I could have when I got home. This allowed me not to have to worry about goign to the store or sending someone else out there to get it for me.

I was on liquids but, was able to have lowfat cottage cheese, SF pudding and SF Jello, lowfat chicken or beef broth, SF popsicles, Protein Shakes, low sugar or SF cranberry juice, Decaf coffee, decaf tea, skim milk......think that's about it. But after surgery I barely wanted any of it.

Thank you all for your comments. You have added things I have not thought of yet. I have 1 week liquid fast starting tomorrow.

Surgery 10/15 @715 am.

I have slowly been stocking up for myself.

Now I have to plan for my husband to eat.Busy cooking today to get a few meals made so I can just plate them up.I think I will do better that way.

All of these ideas are perfect, you will need Chapstick for the hospital. I brought comfy clothes for my 2nd day, once they pull the cath out you can wear normal clothes (bring baggy comfortable stuff, slippers with a non skid bottom for walking).

Hey JustJenn..... I also like to have #2 started by lunch... some days I am more thirsty than others where I will have #2 gone by lunch. I'm glad someone else thinks like me :)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
