I had surgery 7/23/12 and have been living on Protein Water. The one thing I notice is that I never really feel hungry tho. If it wasn't for the fact that I have to have the protien in my diet I wouldn't even think about food.

Is this normal? Does anyone else who had surgery never feel hungry? The draw back is I am real weak. I can't go for more than 15-20 minutes on my feet without getting real weak and start to be in pain in my belly. I am at the point where I can eat chili and things like that so I will give that a try and see if it gets better. Anyone else out there feeling the same?

I hope the chili I made last night helps. Not that I feel the need to eat it but I know I need the protien and hopefully the energy that comes from it.

Everyone is different something will work for you . I would love some chili right now I have been on liquids for 3 weeks and I hope tomorrow the doctor will let me go to the purée stage. Good luck

Much better once you can chew something;) be careful with protien water, it fills you up but not much protein. Can you drink protien shakes? If you can get up to 60-70g of protien you won't feel so weak

My body rejects the shakes. I tried all kinds. Milk free no sugar carnation instant. I did em all. No luck. I was eating greek yogurt and the same thing happened after a while. Now I'm on the stage where I can eat ground beef so hopefully that helps.

Not uncommon at all to not be hungry for some time following surgery. Nothing to worry about.

Not getting your Protein - that's a different story. You might try getting some unflavored Protein powder. First thing in the morning, put a scoop of the powder in a small bowl. Depending on the powder, one scoop is 20g or more of protein. When you eat or drink something, put a pinch of the protein powder in. You can add it to almost anything and if it's just a pinch, you shouldn't notice the taste too much. By the end of the day you've eaten an additional 20g of protein, a pinch at a time.

I sometimes wonder if doctors and others in their offices do a good job of helping folks understand the importance of protein. Unlike fats or starches, your body cannot store protein. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and the nine "essential amino acids" must be obtained from food - they are essential because your body cannot manufacture them. That means they have to be replenished. Every day. Carbs are king when it comes to energy but when you're on a low carb diet, your body will use protein for energy instead. Every cell in your body contains protein. Remove all of the Water in your body and 75% of what's left is - protein. Protein is critically important in the healing process following surgery. Protein is a key player in helping the body fight off bacterial and viral infections. Protein will help minimize muscle loss during rapid weight loss and will also help reduce hair loss to a minimum. Try anything you can think of until you're getting ALL of your protein in, every day. You'll be glad you did!

I have read they cut nerves in our stomach so in the beginning we won't feel hungry but it will come back. I would really try to get your protein in anyway you can. If the ground beef works great. We were told by our NUT 120g of protein a day. How much ground beef would you need to eat? Syntax nectar is a f ruity type protein you can put in stuff maybe try some samples of that. What about broth or soup with unjury flavor free protein? Good luck!

120 grams. Wow. That's really tough. Can you eat that much? And yes I know a few people who were never hungry at the beginning but the hunger does come back. Hang in there!

I found I could not do the Protein shakes either 12 brands no luck, but I came across EAS soy protein and it was a miracle! Also, can you tolerate cottage cheese? Another good source of protein. I'm 2 months out and I never get hungry, everyone is different.

There's approximately 7g of protein in an ounce of ground beef so you'd need to eat about 17oz a day to hit 120g of protein. Might be doable if you really like ground beef. LOL. Adding beans to your chili will help add protein as well. Since the doctor cleared you for ground beef, you might check with him/her about turkey, chicken, eggs and fish as well. All very rich sources of protein and all, with the exception of eggs, could be ground. Eggs are pretty soft just about any way you eat them! Cottage cheese and low fat or skim milk are also good sources of protein. Hummus is another good protein source but pretty high in calories. You'll be back on regular food before you know it and then the options are almost limitless!!

DL What a great idea on the Protein powder and a pinch here or there. Never thought of that and will be trying that myself.

Roman...I had my surgery 7/11 and still don't feel hungry. I have to remind myself to eat as well. I try to drink one shake a day mainly because it's 25 grams of protein in liquid form so easier to get down. I do admit though that I sometimes gag at the thought of drinking it so I have to doctor them up a bit. I use sf flavorings and different combos on them to do that and get through them. I've had a slight tummy or intestinal ache the past few days so thinking I may be becoming lactose intolerant I switched tried a soy based shake today. Taste is different for sure but, again with some doctoring up it helps. Some of the things I use to change the flavors: Add Torani sugar free syrups, cocoa powder or capella sugar free/calorie free drops. It's worked so far...hope some of this info helps.

I for one can tell you protein is very important. I had an infection in one of my incision sites. After the surgeon looked at it and took care of things she upped my protein intake from 50-60 grams to 70-80. I have to tell you the healing started working alot faster once the protein was upped. So I know that goes for our insides too. Make sure to get it in!
