I hear so many post-ops talk about gas pain and for someone who is pre-op like myself, how would you describe it? What does it feel like?

My sister just got her surgery done on the 25th, and is experiencing gas pain. I'd like to know sort of what she's feeling! I also would like to know as a way to prepare myself for when it's my turn :)

It feels like terrible air pressure ! Almost like gigantic bubbles . Like you have to pass gas and can't . Extreme bloating ! It's a throbbing pain !

Need I go on ? Lol

I really don't have gas pains anymore honestly ... Nothing more than before surgery . I think I am bloated still though .

Gas pain is what kicked my ass! Soon as I got my barrings after surgery, all I could think of is the amount of pain I was in due to the gas. The more I walked the better I felt though.

Thanks! About how long did your gas pain last?

My gas pain was something else. I literally broke down crying on day 5, which also happened to be the last day I had gas pains. My mom gave me a spoonful of milk of mag. That stopped the pain immediately and then a few hrs after that I had my first BM post op. What a relief.

Like nothing really lol. I was scared but I knew if I wanted some sort of relief I'd have to at least try. But now whenever I feel I must go, I have a spoonful without cringing. Lol

My doctor suggested mineral oil and that is just nasty! Like drinking vegetable oil.

Milk of mag comes in flavored and unflavored versions. Bought the unflavored by mistake one time - not a good idea! LOL! GasX is also good. Everyone is different but it passes relatively quickly - not the gas, but the pain. A preponderance of gas seems to be the price of admission to the big losers club!

I wanted to give my sister something for the gas pains, but the nurse said NO gas-x or anything else. She said nothing would help but walking. It's funny, because some are allowed gas-x or infant gas relief drops and others are expected to take nothing and endure it lol. Very confusing!

Very common for doctors to have different ideas on many aspects of the care for their patients. Forum posts, blogs, articles - all may have the very best of intentions. But if you trust your doctor enough to go under his or her knife, you gotta trust them for post-op care as well. I would think twice (or ten times) before ignoring the advice of my doctor in favor of information from any of these other sources.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
