What People Really Look Like

Recommended Posts

Was surfing about and came across this and love it - for any and all of us working with body images issues (which is most likely all of us) this is a beautiful read.

I am not sure if I'm allowed to post here. I know I'm not allowed to start a thread but there was some discussion about being able to post in response? Unsure. Anyway tell me if I should delete/stop please.

So in an act of, what was for me, MASSIVE courage, I started going to a Korean spa years ago. The kind where you have to be naked in front of many, many other women while you all shower, use hot tubs, relax, sauna etc. I tried not to stare but I was very curious. There are women/girls from age 1 to age 80 there, all races, all shapes, and sizes from anorexic-looking to 400 lbs.

Really the only ones that have near perfect bodies are the young girls who haven't had children. And my saying this should tell you that they are very easily identified just by how they look. All the rest of us sag, droop, jiggle, wobble, and flop. So unless you are 16-22 years old, that's how we all look.

But I have yet to see anyone that I thought was "ugly". Really, we don't look ugly or undesirable. In each of those women, I can see what some man/woman would find beautiful and attractive.

It was a huge revelation for me even though I understand how photoshopping works :). If you can go to one, do it as therapy for yourself. You will come away loving your body much more than before. And the self-consciousness? Is gone as soon as you slip into the soothing, warm bubbles.

What a great read. I bookmarked it for days I need a little lift. Just this morning I noticed I have a tiny but wrinkly butt. This blogger's post makes me feel better about it.

When I was in the States I was devoted to my yoga class, I went 3 times a week at least. It was held in a studio where one entire wall was mirrors so you got to see yourself and everybody else and every time when we would be in some pretzel seated position, I would look around the room and marvel at just how beautiful the female form is. This wasn't a class full of professional yogis with taut bodies either, it was full of every kind of woman, but seeing the feminine beauty all around me helped me see myself :)

I just re-read your post and it was very interesting-and yes very brave. I also reread the link and thought it was great too.

My boyfriend said something kind of similar to me... along the lines that all women who have had kids look like me... just shows we have lived real lives. Of course I assumed he was some combination of blind/crazy/lying...ha

We have since discussed this more... with my pending plastics and he of course does see that I have more extra skin then typical, but he always tells me that I dress just amazing, like he would never have guessed I used to be obese.

I love the basic point of that article though - real people are beautiful!

Did your bfriend know you when you weighed more? I have one friend who didn't know me before, we met in a dance class...she is very sporty. When I told her I had lost 50 pounds (what I had lost when I met her) she said she would have never guessed, she just thought I was sporty too! I just saw her again tonight at class, after about 4 months, and she said I looked like a model.... I realized I had lost about 18 pounds from the last time I had seen her(thank you 5:2). All very strange to see myself that way, through a "normal" persons eyes.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
