What is your post op diet ?

Recommended Posts

I find it Interesting everyone is so different, I'm wondering what your post op requirements were and your surgeons stats for leaks?

I'm 4 weeks of anything I can get through a straw, 4 weeks mushy and 4 weeks soft then normal eating, and my surgeon has never had a leak.

I am never ever to use a straw again. 3 days of Clear Liquids, 18 days of full liquids, week 3- 3months is puree, 3 months -6 months soft to regular foods. No flour products until 9-12 months. My Surgeon has done over 5 thousand and has only had 1 leak.

2 days Clear Liquids, 1 week full liquids, 1 week puree, 2 weeks soft food, then regular food.

No problems at all. I'm 4 months' post op.

And then of course the 2 week preop liquid diet. But patients from this office are hugely successful. One gal that I work 128 pounds lighter and is still loosing about a pound a week 14 months out.

The first few days was basically liquids but for the first month I am to eat purees. After that, I transition to regular food. I had no pre-op diet either.

I thought my surgeon was conservative with the diet progression. I guess he is for the first 6 weeks, but yours has mine beat after that.

Week 1 - clear liquids only

Weeks 2-4 - clear liquids & 3 Protein shakes a day

Weeks 5-6 - puree

Weeks 7-8 - soft foods

Week 9 - start introducing regular foods

I do wonder about those who move to soft & regular foods so soon after surgery. I just started soft foods three days ago & have had some issues. I've done fine with the things I had pureed in the previous two weeks, just not "pulverizing" them any more, as well as cottage cheese. But some new foods, like fish & turkey, aren't sitting well. The first try of salmon made a return trip. Today some halibut was better, but I had to let it get cold before my stomach could handle it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
