Finally made that call

Recommended Posts

My dr has been advising me to look into weight loss surgery since January of this year, I finally made the call this past Friday, the rep called me back today to obtain my insurance info I'm with blue cross blue shield ppo in Illinois and waiting for the rep to call back and advise me if my insurance will cover the surgery, needless to say, I'm on pins and needles right now, it took months for me to go with my drs advice, after reading so much about the sleeve process over the months, I'm very confident that I've made the right choice.

Congrats for making that first step! I was terrified to make that call to RSVP for one of the info seminars my doctor's office gives. It was like admitting to everyone that I'm fat (um, like I was hiding it from anyone? lol) I had been pondering the surgery for quite awhile and finally I realized I needed to act and now.

One of the deciding factors was after reading so many forums I saw one overriding theme. The biggest disappointment I saw from people is that they just wished they had done it earlier.

Lots of good information and great people here - glad you're here!

I had been thinking about it for years until I made the call. I had even called insurance to see if I had options. One day I woke up and made the call, haven't looked back since. It will be exactly 1 month from calling to having my surgery done. Excited but nervous!

Hi I'm new to this all and would love any advice. What's the process to qualify. Any step to step advice. I'm currently in a weight management program that is required in California. But what to do next. Any advice our suggestions are tremendously welcomed. I'm really excited to start this new life but would appreciate any guidance.

Thank you, my insurance is still getting verified but I'm pretty optimistic, and I also came to the determination to act now, I will be 38 next year I'm not getting any younger.

I'm excited as well and thankful that there is so much feedback available, I'm in the very early stages of this I wouldn't be much of a guide but I do wish you much success, from what I have read and also from talking with others that have had the surgery, some insurance plans require a 6 month dr managed nutrition program before they will approve the surgery and some will only require basic testing and phycological insight to approve the surgery right away. Im hoping for a quick approval I've had over 20 years of dieting experience, I'm pretty good to go. Lol

I'm pretty much at the same stage as you. I go in for my initial consult on October 15th. I called and submitted my paperwork on September 13th. They have verified my benefits and it looks like I just have to have a psyche evaluation and a nutritional consult to get approved. My case worker says I should be able to have the surgery by the end of the year. I sure hope so because I have been going back and forth for about 2.5 years and I finally made the decision to go for it! Now....I'm ready! I'm excited, nervous, a little scared....all totally normal from what I've read.

I wish you the best of luck and look forward to meeting you on the other side!

Thank you cushy! Thanks I'm currently in the weight management ( two months in) I'm excite and nervous. I just want to know it's going to happen I just fear that they will not approve our something. I know it's silly but I can't help it. I should complete the program by end of January. And hoping the process to meet with the surgeon will go fast and approval as well. Thanks again and best wishes.

Thank you, best wishes to you as well, it's perfectly understandable how you feel, having this surgery is a huge deal, your already in the maintenance part if your insurance wouldn't cover it they would advise you up front so you are good to go and next summer will be awesome for the both of us. YEA!!!!!!!!!

This describes me to a T! I looked into bypass 8 years ago, went thru all the pre appointments, even the psych eval... Didn't get approved. Then, tried Medifast, lost about 35 pounds, and have gained it all back, lost and gained again like 100 times since then. I'm just done! I like the sleeve idea much better than the bypass. Not sure exactly why but it sounds better.

Anyways, I made the call on Monday, and got initial info from insurance, found the in-network provider, sent in information forms and they verified my insurance. I have my initial consult and NUT consult scheduled for Oct. 15th, my medical eval scheduled for Oct. 18th, and then will only need to get my psych eval done (as far as I know at this point). They said I could expect to have a surgery date approx 8 weeks from now! Maybe around xmas time? I hope so!!!!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
