Losing too much or too quickly?

Recommended Posts

Tomorrow will be my 10th month post op. For the past six months I would say my weight loss has been steady - 8-10 pounds a month. With no real stalls.

This past 2 weeks I lost 9 pounds. Which I'm loving - only 6 more pounds to goal. But I'm also concerned at how quickly I'm still losing at 10 months out and with a BMI of 24.1.

I've been traveling for work this last two weeks and stress level is high - I'm sure I'm not getting in all my calories. But traveling is part of what I do. Has anyone lost too much? Or couldn't stop the weight loss at goal?

As crazy as it sounds, I couldn't stop losing weight, I was 17 lbs below goal and started to panic. I was looking gaunt, although, at the time, I didn't "see" it, but everyone around me did. I talked to my dietitian and she instructed me to increase my caloric intake. Add a couple of Snacks a day, or mini meals, something to get in more calories. At that time, I never had more than 800 calories a day. I felt good and struggled to get in the additional ones I needed to put back on a little weight. I managed to gain back ten pounds. I look better, wear 4's, 6's and mediums. I found where I need to be to maintain, 1300 calories and I go between 143.5 (this morning) to 146.5 - I reached goal in six months, I've been maintaining for 2.5 years without any trouble. I still have great restriction and could lose more if I wanted to. It's crazy, but it's nice to feel in control.

Oh, to have that problem. (Not really). I did lose easily and quickly but when I reached go (8mos) I immediately starting increasing carbs and cals. So I stopped and starting slowly gaining! Lol. I'd take the advice given above. Good luck and congrats on the weight loss!

This is something that I don't worry about too much. My body does regulate itself and if I eat healthy, meaning Proteins and veggies then I do really well. If I eat too much sugary foods than I will gain weight. NTVTxn has done very well with her plan. :P We all will and must find our niche..... :P

To slow the losses down up the quality and fat content. Little bit of dark chocolate, maybe a few full fat Greek yogurts and cheeses or lattes here and here. Nuts, especially almonds and macadamias are a good nutritious choice that are low in size/volume and high in nutrition.

I've been on all chicken/fish/lean meat type of foods - followed by Snacks such as veggies or a salad. I've never been able to stomach the Protein shakes no matter what flavor and what brand - so I try and get the Protein from my meals.

My meals are about 4-5 small bites. I've never weight and calculated my calories. Which could be the reason why I'm at this point. But honestly I barely have time to eat - so I just make sure to grab what I can eat with the condition that its must be nutritious to my body.

Thank you for the advise - it really helps! I'll try and up my calories this week - back to what I should be eating and not stress too much until I drop in the low normal BMI. :-)

I wouldn't really worry until you get to goal, I didn't. I actually wanted to be five pounds UNDER my physician's goal. Then you'll have to find where you need to be to maintain. If you're still wanting to lose that six pounds and maybe a few more to have a pad, then I'd wait to increase calories until you get the that point. You're really doing good, congrats!

I'm also below goal and dont want to lose any more. I'm having a hard time adding more food though. I just don't want to eat more.

Same here - I truly don't enjoy eating anymore. It hurts (even liquids). And I never feel hunger so it's very easy to forget to eat when I'm busy or traveling.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
