Hunger + Angry = Hangry!

Recommended Posts

So, I'm hearing that the sleeve surgery keeps you from feeling physically hungry. Currently, when I'm really hungry, I feel SUPER sick, like I'm going to vomit. My mouth waters and I get shaky and it's hard to focus on anything. Even maintaining eye focus on something i difficult. Plus I'm basically a terror (my poor husband!). I've been tested for diabetes and I'm not even pre-diabetic, so it's just a weird blood sugar thing I guess...?

I'm wondering if anyone has felt this and if these things also go away after surgery? I'm just thinking if I had all of these symptoms that I've come to associate with hunger but without the actual hungry feeling I would probably think I was having some sort of episode. lol It's really bad! Any insight would be much appreciated!

After the sleeve I did not feel the normal signs of hunger as you described. However I can still tell when I 'm hungry, and my sleeve does tell me when to eat. I usually time it I eat about every 3 to 4 hours. At times I can feel hungry in between meals but sometimes its just thirst and sometimes its hunger because I don't eat much. I get full fast off of a couple bites of food . I'm going on week 6 and its frustrating but rewarding. I usually eat till I feel comfortable because if I eat until I'm full I had to much. Everyone is different so just be careful and take it slow.

I was a total snickers commercial pre op..... Physically ill, shaky, starving, drama queen (my friend used to say she was going to stick food in her purse before we went out) and like you I am not diabetic. I have not had that once since surgery. I do get hungry (11 days post op) but never starving just know I need to eat.

OMG!!! This is exactly what happens to me, I get all those symptoms. It has made it hard to stick to diets. I become a monster b***ch that needs food, My husband gets frustrated with me and hates that i'm always in a bad mood when I'm trying to diet. I have not had surgery yet, and he thinks that I'm always going to be in a bad mood because I won't be able to eat like I use to. This is one of many fears I have. I hear so many say it's different after surgery, and I sure am praying it is for me to.

I've been snapping on my family all week, I'm starving!!! I'm on a non-starchy veggie and non sugar beverage fast for another week (1week in). I'm running out of things to eat and with everyone eating everything around me including my boyfriend who had the full bypass 3 yrs ago and eats everything and offers it to me knowing I can't!!!! My surgery is on sept 16

When I get those feelings I kick back with a nice hot cup of chicken broth with a little garlic powder and pepper in it and binga banga...all is well in my world, NOT!!! but it does make the hunger feelings go away!!! I know this liquid diet is going to be sooo worth it, especially this time next year when hopefully I will be looking at a new me!!! :D Hangry is a good new word for these feelings though!

I don't have hunger per se like I used to, but my body gets hungry, ghrelin or no. I get an animal kind of manic need for nourishment. I will say that it's easily satisfied with a couple bites, and I can't get more than that down without barfing. I've found a cup of milk to work wonders when it hits, and it helps your Protein count.

Yes! This is me too. And also why I'm worried about what it's going to be like after surgery. If I was like this all the time it would RUIN my marriage, and life in general probably. I seriously panic when i'm hungry. It's insane. The easy answer is to just eat small meals throughout the day and not let it get to that point but my job is so busy I barely have time to take a lunch most days and I'm a crazy person by the time I get home. I really hope this surgery solves this problem, this alone would be a huge improvement in my quality of life.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
