How much water should I be drinking?

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

I was banded about 4 days ago and I have a question about Water. They say that I should be drinking 64ounces per day. I heard that you should sip it slowly and take one hour to sip even 6 ounces and if you don't then the pouch will stretch and become too big. Is this true? Also, after the first fill, is it more diffficult to drink water? I take certain medications which require me to stay properly hydrated and I need to drink a lot of water. How much and how quick should I be drinking water. I am confused!:help:

64 oz is correct. I must admit - I don't drink anywhere near that. BAD. You should sip slowly in the beginning especially to make sure how you handle it. Some people cannot gulp Water anymore. I just had my first fill and I don't have a problem at all.

The advice about slipping slowly over an hour's period is usually geared more toward RNY patients. When I had my surgery my program was geared toward RNY with lap being a minority, and unfortunately they gave us all the same dietary guidelines. I did the math one day, and with all the Water, time to eat, etc. it would have been phsically impossible to get in everything they were saying to get in, unless I didn't sleep.

64oz is the general guideline. Some people will advocate for an additional 8 oz per 10 # overweight if you're on a high Protein, low carb diet. Some days I hit 64, some days more, usually I'm probably in the 30s.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
