Newbie Question on liquids!

Recommended Posts

Hi! I am being sleeved on sept. 18th! Wondering how long it takes you to drink after surgery? Like an 8 ounce Protein Shake will take me how long to finish. I've been making them with 12 ounces of skim milk or 16oz. Water. I'm thinking I should cut down the Fluid amount to get used to the taste difference? Thanks !

I could not drink more than 2 ozs of Protein Drink every few hours for the first couple months. Everything you do now will be dramatically changed post op. my post op instructions said to have 8 oz of Protein Drink in one sitting. I tried to force that in slowly and was really hurting after 4 oz.

I asked my doc and she was surprised that my instructions printed 8 oz and said they would change it.

You may be tempted to follow a plan but the key is to take everything in very slowly and stop immediately upon feeling any type of fullness.

I was able to take in all my fluids without problem within four days and take gulps of fluids within three weeks. I was on clear fluids for my two days in the hospital, full liquids for the next five days and, by the one week point, I was cleared for soft foods. There's a huge range of recovery times and experiences and it is impossible to know what yours will be.

I am 4 days post op and I can take in 8 oz of Water and 1 oz of Protein an hour. I can't take in over 2oz of protein in any given sitting. In the first week or so the liquids are way more important than the protein. I can tell that I'm increasing everyday. There is no way I could sit and drink a shake in one sitting right now.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
