Last must-have food before your pre-op diet

Recommended Posts

So yesterday I found out I will be sleeved on September 9. Which means I only have 5 more days to eat a favorite food. I am planning to drive an hour to the nearest cheesecake factory on Saturday to get a slice of cheesecake. Did anyone else have a food that they just had to have before starting their new life?

I had a Protein shake and lean Protein. :) I was not the "food funeral" person and I don't regret it a bit. Those foods won't disappear off the face of the earth after your sleeve and why add more poundage that you will have to lose?

I know not every doctor does the liver shrinking pre-op diet. Do you not have one?

With the possible exception of fizzy drinks you'll still be able to eat 'everything' after your op, in time and in much smaller amounts. No need for food funerals - though many of us wish there was.

i start my liver reduction diet next week and tomorrow i am going out for cheese fries and a beer. that's all i really want. i know i can have them again, but i don't think i will choose to eat them after surgery. i will miss having a whole stomach so i can go to all you can eat sushi! :( but it'll all be worth it!

The only thing I did was go out to eat with a good friend before my pre op diet at my favorite restaurant. Ordered my normal and came home with a ton of leftovers which my mom took care of. I am day 6 of my pre op diet and doing pretty good.

Yes. Two weeks of Protein shakes an a small meal. While I realize that one day I will be able to eat a little cheesecake again, I know it will never be like it is now. So while I don't intend to get a huge meal and totally pig out, I'm going to enjoy every big ole mouthfull of delicious creamy cheesecake.

Before i started my pre op diet...i just had to have beer battered fish and chips with lots of salt and vinegar. I was certain that after being sleeved, i may never eat beer battered fish and fries...also...poutine...a big bowl of it..cause im convinced it will be a loooooooooooooooooong time until i ever taste that again. However...now that i have started my pre op diet..i choose not to think about those foods because i know i can get into the state of mind that says: "you may never have that again so why not have it one last time" Truth is: I will probably have it one day..but right now its time to think about healing my body from the years of abuse that i have put it through from not thinking about health of my body and mind. I dont want to be the next bowel cancer patient. I dont want to be the next type 2 diabetic. Its time to start living

OMG! I just had a mouthgasm. Now I can't wait till Monday to start my Protein shakes. I might even skip the Cheesecake Factory and make the Key Lime Pie Protein shake instead. Yummy!

I'm starting my liquid diet on the 3rd so I am planning to make all my favorite meals this week on top of visiting a couple of my favorite restaurants. It's not a food funeral because I'm not going to go overboard and I realize that these foods aren't gone forever. It will be a long time before I ever get to have some of the foods again so I want to enjoy them one last time before I start my journey.

Today is my last day of my pre-op diet, although my Center didn't put me on liquids only - just high Protein, LOW carb, no sugar, fruit, booze, etc. for a little over a week. I've lost 10 lbs since starting it and feel great. Since tonight will be my last "meal" (tomorrow is liquids only, Monday is surgery) I plan to relax a bit and enjoy myself. I'll be at a wedding and may even have a small glass of wine. You can put your mind to anything and be successful!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
