My surgeon requires that you have to quit 2 months before surgery. He does blood/urine tests during pre op testing and will NOT do surgery if ere are traces of nicotine

That is 2 months prior to surgery, then she should wait at least another month post surgery while her stomach heals from the surgery and the incisions heal. You really don't want to mess with this surgery. It is too important! Can her PCP help her quit altogether? I have heard that people are really helped by using Chantix that they stopped smoking after 1 week!

Ok, but if she is already looking for the minimum amount of time to quit, that just shows she is not serious about quitting.

I used Chantix 4 years ago & haven't smoked since. You can smoke during the first week but it is a 3-4 month program & you do have to want to quit. It took more than 3 years before I no longer had any urge to smoke.

Chantix is supposed to lessen the chance of gaining a lot of weight when quitting. I did gain about 10-12 pounds over 6 months & then lost it over the next 6 months without changing anything. But a former co-worker of mine says she gained 50 pounds & is now diabetic.

Joe that's not what I was asking I meant the time up until surgery for safety reasons she will be quitting after that some drs recommend 6-8 weeks before surgery others 3 months etc

I was told 5 weeks. I am in Indiana. I don't have my date yet, but when I went to the seminar and the doctor said that, I quit that night cold turkey. It has been tough, but has also been two months.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
