Optifast Question: re caffeine

Recommended Posts

Gday everybody. On the Optifast brochure it says you can't have caffeine. I love my coffee in the morning. Can I have decaffeinated coffee, or is that a no no? Please need help with this.:huggie: :biggrin1: Susannah

Caffeine tends to dehydrate your body, and since it's harder to get down a glass of Water do to time, it's just not worth taking the time to dehydrate yourself (if that makes sense) I too was a slave to caffeine not with coffee but tea and soda. I had to give up the soda due to carbonation, so I have to have my tea....decaf

Hi Susannah.

If you are doing Optifast as a pre-op diet - you might be able to get away with one-two cups a day. My doc said I didn't have to give it up if I kept it under two cups.

This was great news for a caffeine junky...

Of course, you should always follow YOUR doc's instructions if you can.

:]

I also have to do Optifast and there were several people in my meeting (we have to take two classes pre surgery) who had questions about coffee. Basically the nurse said it is better to try and ween yourself off of it now because after the surgery you really shouldn't have any for a least 3 months since it dehydrates you and you are just getting used to your small stomach. It is much better to have Water and you need to make sure you can get enough water down before adding something that dehydrates you.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
