Extended release pills (XL) and the foamies

Recommended Posts

So, I was instructed to take one of my extended release pills, the evening before 08/05 surgery. Wellbutrin XL 300m for those keeping track.

So this afternoon, I had what I can only guess was 'the foamies' after swallowing the last sip of some juice (probably twice the size of my other sips-I've learned that lesson).

For those with a weak stomach, stop reading. I had really bad nausea post-op, and threw up for about the first 24 hours, but hadn't thrown up since then...

So, much to my surprise, there was something solid in the emesis. At first I assumed it was an anti nausea pill I had just taken, but that pill I had broken in half, so it was the wrong shape. I still had barf bags from the hospital, and that is what I had thrown up in, so it was transparent. It was a round pill. Well, with a lot of ab soap, hand sanitizer, and bravery, I squished the pill, and most of its contents came out. This was a pill I had taken 6 days ago, mind you.

I retrieved the capsule, googled the labeling on it, still very clear and legible btw.

The pic I took wasn't very clear, but the pill's coating still was.

Could this have been the cause of my vomiting, or was it just the larger sip?

I don't make it a habit of pawing through my own emesis, btw, I just was surprised to find solids in the bag after 3+ weeks of nothing solid.

I'm shocked they told you to take it, being an extended release pill. I also take Wellbutrin XL and I have to have crushable Wellbutrin (read not extended release kind) for four weeks starting the day of the surgery. But yes, I could see that sitting in your new tummy and causing havoc.

Well my goodness. I was planning on taking my Wellbutrin XL the evening before. That is just crazy

I have always had trouble with this pill. I take it too and have seen it come out in the potty in its original form too.

There are lots of "generic" manufacturers of this pill out there, and they are under no regulations about what binders they use and how the pill breaks down, so some of them do not break down well. Like I said, I've seen my pill in the potty. It is a yellow oval pill that I've had trouble with in the past.

On my last visit to m y surgeon, he changed me to a 150mg BID dose that was not sustained release, said it was easier on my stomach.

Things that make you go hmmmmmm.

Yes I learned a long time ago that the generic doesn't work for me but the brand name does. It's the same for my Dad who is on it too.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
