FitBit Aria and Body Fat %

Recommended Posts

I am concerned and confused. I have now lost 35lbs, and am almost 2 months post-op. I weight once a week, on Sunday. I have noticed that my FitBit Aria is reporting that my body fat % is still pretty high. Its usually around 43-45%.

Sooooooo.....what am I losing exactly? Just muscle?! Or am I losing both fat and muscle, which would cause the BF% to relatively remain the same?

I don't know what all to tell you, so if you have questions about what I am doing and eating etc....please just ask!

Should I even be concerned with it at this point?

Please and thank you!

I wouldn't worry about the body fat %, in all honesty. Yes, you're losing muscle, but you're also losing fat. To prevent this, keep exercising and lift weights. It doesn't matter your sex, just lift weights.

When it comes to body fat %, the only ACCURATE way to measure that is through measuring tape or doing the test where you float in Water (I don't remember the name). Most likely your FitBit is using some current to check, which can be thrown off by a lot of factors.

Measure yourself and check your body fat % that way. If it's true you're just losing muscle, which I highly doubt, talk to your surgeon and keep up the Protein and exercise. Hope that helps!

If you want to sanity check the Fitbit, you can use the Navy test.

I agree with Will on the float test. It is the absolute most accurate method. It also costs a lot more money than a caliper or tape.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
