i'd love to think that i could do it by myself, but then reality smacks me across the face - no way on God's green earth could i do this by myself.

i am using this tool in every way possible. eating right and exercising.

the band and i are in a partnership ... the bad helps me eat right, and i work my ass off.

Could I have lost it? Absolutely...I have done so numerous times.

Could I have kept it off? Nope. I am only early into my journey, but I can tell you from those last 50+ attempts to take it off and KEEP IT OFF that I know I couldn't do it on my own. Lord knows, I've tried...in fact, I have probably lost 700# or more in the past 20 years.

That's why I spent the money and had the surgery -- to FINALLY get healthy once and for all. This is the first time in my life that every time I go down another pound I can feel confident that I will not see that weight again.

It's a nice feeling!

Yes I can take it off but not keep it off. For the first time in my life I won't be "going off my diet" when I reach goal. I think I may have too drink some calories (carnation instant Breakfast ) to keep me up to my goal of around 150!!!!

The band has helped me expand my world farther then the cookie and candy isles at the grocery store.

I know the band did it for me!!! Cleaning the pantry I found at least 4 different teas, pills, drinks and diets that I used to lose weight in the past...

The band sure does help to re-educate myself when it comes to portions and excercise

Anyone can lose weight. It's just a matter of how much, and how long they can keep it off. I never was able to keep any weight off for any good amount of time. The band helps me keep it off.

I found myself being incredibly rude at Christmas dinner.... my Sister had a plate of fruit salad and Pea salad - not a full plate - but probably a cup or more of each. Then she went back for her "real" food.

She came back with dinner plate that was heaped over with turkey, stuffing, potatoes - you know the drill.

I found my mouth hanging open - and I clearly had a look of horror upon my face - because my poor sis started justifying her giant plate of food.< /p>

I may not have the portion size thing completely down - but there has been a RADICAL shift in what I consider to be an acceptable amount of food.

YOU TOO can be appalled at your family members eating the same amounts of food you used to eat... if you get the band. :]

Seriously - After 10 mos - I haven't lost that much weight - but I am going at it very slowly and can barely tell that I am on any kind of an eating plan. I have lost large amounts of weight before... I lost over 80 lbs to get below 200 a while back - but I had to completely OBSESS over every bite of food and every calorie burned. It took an all consuming concentration to lose those 80 lbs - and no time or thougth at all to gain every one of them back - with interest.

I decided I didn't want to obsess any more. I just want to live my life and eat less. The band makes that possible. Truly.

How many years before this one can I say that I weigh less now than I did before Thanksgiving? That would be NONE.

Keep on researching. When you're ready, you'll know.

Hugs!

I am where you are mamaz2ndbaby....Instead of spending almost $2k on surgery, could I buckle down and do hynosis or some other form of behavior modification?????

Crapola, this decision is a hard one.

My question for you all is:

Knowing the amount of weight and effort (exercise, diet modification etc) it took to get and keep the weight off do you think you could have done it without the band?

Nope. No way in hell. I could have, and have, lost about 50 pounds. Then, I'd have hit a plateau, or gone through the holidays eating too much as I just did, gotten frustrated and quit. Instead of sitting here after my nice healthy bandster lunch feeling so good about being right back on track.

The band makes it possible for me to eat a reasonable amount, and honestly not want anymore. It makes it possible for me to focus on something besides food: what I ate last that I regret, what I'm going to eat next, if I'll be "good" or not.

I would do it again in a heartbeat. No question.

The band has given me what I lacked before...control. IT helps me portion size, it helps me control my hunger, it is helping me control my future! I have been able to lose weight any number of ways...but it never stayed off, and like ReneBean, I had to THINK about every single bite that did or did not go into my mouth. With the band, I no longer think about food that much. I have found a spot, where I am not hungry, so I tend to forget to eat if I keep myself busy. If I am not busy my head tells me I need to snack all day!!! But as for my stomach? It isn't hungry! I have learned to eat in a healthier way, healthy food first, then if I have room and still want it, I eat sweets or carbs---whatever is calling me! There just isn't a lot of room to eat much of it!

Take today as an example---used to be for lunch I would have had a sandwich, 1/4-1/2 a bag of fritos (not a tiny bag!) and then found some sort of goodie to eat as dessert. Instead, today I took the ham I would have made a sandwich with, and rolled it up with a slice of cheese, and ate it, I ate 3 of the scoops size fritos, and could not finish the others left on my plate, was just one of the times, my band said enough! I have a square of Ghirardelli dark chocolate, I was planning to eat, but it too will have to wait. Control----it is awesome!!!! Do it without the band---I only wish, I would never have gotten to the point I did if I could have. But now I know it is gone, and will stay that way!

Feel free to keep asking what is on your mind!

Kat

When it comes to the band...does it really help you manage your portion sizes? I know I sound conflicted...but this is where I am right now. Thanks for your patience.

Yes, it really does. If I eat beyond that "satisfied" feeling, I am miserable, usually leading to a PB. So there is some really good behavior modification going on.

But it's more then that. Almost always, I'm just "done" after a small portion. Not "done" as in "I really want more but I know I shouldn't, so I'll try to make myself stop". But "done" as in "I just am not interested in more food". It's a revelation for me.

I think some doubt is normal, but it's also a big decision and one you want to think through.

Ah, but do we get a set of Ginzu knives?

I know what you mean. We took MIL to Old Country Buffet, and I was shocked at the amount of food people had piled on their plates going by our table. I realized I would have been one of them before banding, and it was a bit naseating(sp?).

Yep.

I count that moment of Horror as an NSV (Non-Scale-Victory for you Newbies).

Who would have thought a moment of horror could be a good thing?!?

I could not have done this without the band either. As soon as I hit that first plateu, I would have given up on any diet. And my last plateu lasted 8 weeks! Now I'm losing again, but NO WAY would I stick to a diet for 8 weeks without losing.

You said it! I could have lost it without the band, but it would be back already. The first plateau is crucial!!!!! I am at a plateau now, but overall, sticking to the rules because I don't want to have a golf ball in my chest! Most of us here agree that with this tool, we were able to survive plateaus and know the scale will keep going down eventually!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
