I'm currently 3 weeks post surgery and I'm at the point where I am afraid to eat. Mainly because I don't know about the pain and I don't want to go back to my old ways of eating all the crappy food I used to eat. So now I just don't eat at all really. Today I had a banana and my friend made me eat a grilled chicken wing. I didn't even do my Protein the way I should. I'm afraid to eat and fail but I think I'm setting myself up for failure. Any advice?

EAT!

My advice would be to weigh or measure everything you put on your plate. Eat very small bites and chew chew chew. And when your tummy says stop, stop.

Are you drinking Protein Shakes? I really struggled once I hit the pureed and mushy stages because I was afraid to get sick, especially while I was at work, and I am a super picky eater and most things just sounded gross to me. I just kept doing my Protein shakes and trying different foods when I felt like it. My first two days of my "regular" diet, I continued to eat my soft foods for the same reasons. Now in week 5, I am really trying not to drink any shakes and get all of my protein from actual food. Some days I can do it, some days I can't. My advice would be to not stress yourself about it, and try foods when you feel ready. But please make sure you are drinking your protein shakes to get your protein in until you are ready to eat.

Download a free app for tracking food so you log every calorie you eat. I think twice about what I am going to put in my mouth knowing the calories in things first. I am working toward 1000-1200 calories a day which goes really quick! This way you won't be afraid to eat knowing your limits.

The same thing happened to me. My suggestion is keep a food log and stay away from alcohol. I became an acoholic by restricting myself so much.

Also have set times to eat. That way you don't allow yourself to graze throughout the day.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
