I can't speak for others on here, but I didn't feel judged at all. Even by the lady at the check in desk the day of surgery, and I've had experiences with them being a little crabby in the past. Everyone that I had contact with at the hospital was very supportive and happy for me. Not sure if other hospitals are as friendly, but my staff was.

Quite the opposite. Almost my entire floor was bariatric patients, and the only way I knew that we ran into each other in the hall while walking and shared experiences. Some of the nurses had themselves been sleeve patients and gave me some pointers. All in all, I felt the hospital experience was beyond what I expected.

99.99% of all the staff involved in my care at the hospital were superb. One nurse that I encountered briefly during my second morning was ..... odd. She made some unusual remarks in an attempt to be funny I suppose but came off as mocking and insensitive. She was laughing about all the Breakfast items that were being served and pointing out that I could not have any of them (not that I wanted any of them anyway) then she asked the other attendant to go "get me a plate of bacon so I can stand here and eat it right in front of her (me)".

I did report this incident to the nurse in charge later as I thought it was a bit over the line. It was a brief encounter that made me feel uncomfortable but I mostly just put it out of my mind and focused on the truly caring individuals who were quite supportive.

Good to hear about the positive experiences. Wow, that one nurse was pretty insensitive huh? Glad the rest of your stay was better...

jenlen, good for you, reporting that nurse. Hopefully, her supervisor addressed it in such a way that she will never make such a comment again. IMO, she needs transferred to a different floor, or out the door!

Glad you let someone know about that fool.

I think there were 5 bariatric pts on my floor. All had surgery the same day by same Dr.

Many of the staff from nursing, unit techs and housekeeping staff had also been sleeved.

My son was in and out during the day as I was napping on and off after surgery.

Staff would come in the room and he would say to me "did she have it too?" with a smile on his face since I kept telling him everyone who had been through it already:)

Quite the opposite for me. One nurse who had been sleeved 5 months prior was very supportive and told me how much her life has changed for the better. Another mentioned how she thought it was a very brave and positive thing to do. To take control of my health. Every hour when I got up to walk, the nurses at the stations we very encouraging.

It helped me more than I could say!

I was in recovery and had only regained consciousness a short time when the nurse assigned to me learnt over and whispered "Why did you have this done, you just need to eat less and exercise more". My BMI was "just" 36 (the smallest person to be sleeved that day) but I had very significant co-morbidities.

I thought the whole episode was bizarrely amusing, but then I was certain of my choice and my recovery was pretty straightforward.

" you just need to eat less and exercise more" well if it were that easy none of us would be here..........I am greatfull that the hospital I will be having my surgery at has a floor dedicated for bariatic patients and only if there are available beds is any other patient allowed in these rooms which are quite nice.

Is it common to have all bariatric patients together? I guess that's something I could ask my doctors office.

I think its great at my hospital that they do that you can meet people in your area and keep in touch if they choose to and it will be nice to see others walking the hallways going through same thing

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
