What was your longest stall and how far out were you

Recommended Posts

So I know stalls get discussed at nausium but here's another topic about stalls!

I am 6 weeks out and experiencing a frustrating long stall with 2 weeks fo no weight loss even though I am doing my elliptical for 40 minutes 3-4 times a week and eating 1000-1200 calories a day. I know stalls are normal but thought I would have powered through this one by now. I started at 213 and am stuck at 193, far off from goal of 145.

Just curious to hear what have others experienced in the duration of their stalls and how far out from surgery date? If its relevant, comment on how close you were to goal since weight loss gets slower the closer you get.

At a weight that was still in the 270s....which is 120 pounds away from goal... and just three weeks after surgery, I stalled for a full month. Stalled for a MONTH... just THREE WEEKS out.... and with 120 pounds left to lose.

My 2nd month after surgery I stalled for almost the entire month, lost only 3 lbs that month. I actually lost more weight as I got closer to goal because I became very focused on hitting goal and really kept my calories at 600 to 700 a day with a exercise burn of 300 to 500. I'm trying to find my maintenances level now and am still losing around 2lbs a week. I always make sure to take in at least 120grams of Protein so am building muscle.

Between Feb 25- April 25 (months 4-6) i only lost 4 lbs. My wt during this time was mid to high 230's. Very frustrating and disheartening & it really freaked me out. I'd jump on the scale multiple times a day. Some days it would show a big gain! AHHHH!

I think the body has to re adjust itself, & i lost inches during this time. Another factor, i believe... was still doing 2-3 shakes a day PLUS food. The food tasted better, and I could hold more. With milk those shakes are NOT low calorie. You're looking at abt 100 cal for the milk + 100 or more for the powder. I went back to 1 shake a day and monitoring cals via MFP. NUT said to do 1200- 1500 cals a day, but i find i lose better around 1100 per day. It's amazing how quick you can consume 1000 cals. Follow what your dr ofc tells you, dont be tempted by junk food ..even "just a bite" because it might trigger you for more...drink your Water, measure out food on your plate and eat it slow because you will be stuffed very quickly; do some exercise even just walk a little. Above all, DO NOT give up!! stay on track and you WILL start losing again!!

VSG 10/25/12. SW 300...... CW 222 (HW @dr ofc was 303, so i'm down 81 lbs!)

Reigo...i just re-read your post. Are you logging into MFP? Log food plus exercise! If you're only eating 1000 cal and doing elliptical 40 mins, u prob are not getting enough cals. If you eat too little u go into starvation mode and your body hang on to every calorie for dear life. Check it out on My Fitness Pal.com if you haven't already. Just a thought!

thats interesting the calorie thing, because my doc wants me to starvation mode. He said only 300 to 500 cal a day... and even with that I may lose well one week, then sit at the same for 3. I have no idea why with so little intake I should have melted away already LOL

So, a stall is really three weeks at the same weight, no movement.

I had two nine week stalls. One roughly six months out and one between nine months and a year out. In addition, my body seems to hit happy weights - perhaps something to do with the set point theory - where weight fell off even more slowly than usual and I'd lose only a fraction of a pound per week.

I averaged just over six pounds a month in loss and the last twenty pounds took six months to fall off.

Give it time. It's frustrating for all of us, even those of us that hit goal and are trying to lose a few for whatever reason. If that scale starts to get you down, put it away.

And to address starvation mode, that's a theory that's very widely debated here. The real answer for how many calories/carbs you should be getting is up to your body and your activity level. It's as many as you can eat without sabotaging your loss. That said, I've seen that people that incorporate a "free day" along with restrictive days seem to have better results. Our bodies can adapt to ANYTHING we throw at them, so getting stuck in a rut and always doing the same thing can yield diminishing returns over time.

That said, you're not really far enough out for that to be your issue. Odds are good your body is just adjusting and if you keep plugging away you'll get through this shortly.

And don't forget the effect hormones have on women! I still gain several pounds during my cycle each month.

Yes, you read right I M using mfp. I do the elliptical for 40 which burns just over 400 calories according to my precor elliptical and am eating 100-1200 a day and not upping calories on workout days. I can easily add more calories because I can eat a good amount and do get hungry. I may add some more healthy Snacks in the day.

Thanks for all the feedback. I am not letting it get to me and I am proud of the choices I make now but it's hard not to be frustrated. I know it will come off eventually so I will plug along. Time to do elliptical now actually ;)

I'll be 5 months on Monday and I have been stalled for several weeks now. In June in less than one week i dropped 9lbs. went from 234 to 225 and then I stood at 224. In July I was stuck between 224-220 now in August I finally went down to 216 but keep gaining between 220-218.

Today i realized that I haven't poop (SORRY TMI) as much. Especially since i am drinking Iron. Bowel movements are very important.

I'm terrified of not losing anymore but I am keep my hope up!

5 months out, 2 month stall. Thought I was not going to lose any more. But I am.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
