First day back to work

Recommended Posts

Ugh. That didn't go very well. Oh, I lasted 7 of the 8 hours, so I guess it wasn't too bad. So, what did I learn?

1. Don't lean over your laptop for hours. It will hurt

2. Remember to drink your Protein Shake SLOWLY

3. Just because the Soup from the cafeteria tastes delicious, don't eat more than you can "stomach"

4. Always bring liquid Tylenol and GasX strips

5. Be willing to cry uncle and go home and take a nap until the pain goes away

I'm returning to work tomorrow. Two weeks post op. Really not ready but duty calls. I don't

plan to work all day. I will listen

to my body and leave

when needed.

Even though some places do this surgery on an outpatient basis, and others an overnight stay in the hospital, this is still major surgery. Major surgery requires a decent amount of recovery time. I think you always need time to get used to your new way of eating.

Good thoughts, all.

I don't go back to work until next week, but thinking back on other surgeries, I would suggest adding a couple of things.

  1. Get up and move at least once an hour. I know you have lots of work to do and you're probably trying to catch up. Trust me, you're better off stretching your muscles and clearing your head for 5 minutes if you can. (this could probably be considered a corollary to your point #1, actually!)
  2. Don't forget to bring a bottle of Water to your desk. And then, don't forget to DRINK IT.

I don't want to go back to work today, but I must! Yes, I do office work. My building is very large, so there is a lot of walking to get from the parking garage to my office, but it's not bad after that unless I have a lot of meetings. I had no meetings yesterday and probably won't have this week. Getting up to walk periodically is important for anyone who sits at a desk, but I have never been one to do so. I lose track of time when I get "in the zone." If I get exhausted today, I will go home instead of toughing it out. If I had my laptop home, I would ask for a work at home day! I'm such a weeny.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
