How long before you were cleared for swimming?

Recommended Posts

Hello! I am dying to get back in the pool, and was curious how long of a wait everyone's surgeon required before allowing it. I was told 5-6 weeks. Seems a bit long. Curious, how long did you have to wait?

But this may be one thing you should really follow your surgeons advice because different surgeons use different methods of stapling, stitching, etc.

Yeah, you are definitely right! I plan to follow his instructions, but I was curious. A few more weeks won't kill me, although the Texas heat might!

I think it was 4 weeks for me

I was able to get in the pool once all of my incisions were closed (4 weeks I think) but had to wait 8 weeks to do any type of organized Water aerobics class bc of specific motions (such as knee lifts) that could have a small chance of tearing the staple line. When I went in at 4 weeks I used a waterproof bandage over my drain site just to be safe (it was my biggest incision/took the longest to heal).

Started out 4 weeks, but my incisions got infected (I am clumsy and decided to take a dive in some mud about 3 weeks out..ok I fell). After that he moved it back to 8 weeks. As soon as I was cleared I was in the pool, and go every single day! I LOVE it!

I was told it was all about the incisions. I'm going on my fourth week in a few days and my incisions look wonderful I think. I would go now myself.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
